I think it's something like the "Narcissist's Prayer" where of course they don't believe it unless their grifting stumbles on something that makes them hope they might become immortal god-kings yet.
I think they earnestly believe it and the real grifting is the "center left" facade they have so they don't get kicked out of the polycule
Up until a few years ago I do recall
getting brought up, uninvited, in almost every left-leaning online community I can think of, usually under some pretense of "but what about E~L~O~N? He's one of the good ones and (press release copypaste about saving humanity and humans becoming interplanetary species here)" 
I have met many of this one guy in person.
