While I won't judge OP for using SMS, if you're looking for a better alternative, don't use WhatsApp (owned by meta) or telegram (not really secure at all), rather use signal.
Your suggestion for what he should use instead of Signal, is Signal??
All my friends have phone numbers, none of them have WhatsApp or Telegram.
My thoughts exactly. Sounds good on paper, but it wouldn't be possible for me
