Another month gone, another month older, another month at work.

𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚

I've been reading Great Teacher Onizuka and so far it's almost exactly 1:1 like the anime... which means, the horribly aged ableism is about to hit, beyond all the other problematic stuff. Beyond that, it remains as fun as I remember. It's neat. B+

𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐞

Gundam SEED has managed to make it across its entire 50 episode run without making me too annoyed or in amused disbelief over the nonsense happening on the screen. Really, it's... alright. I wish Kira and Lacus were less wooden characters. Athrun and Cagalli were significantly more interesting and 500x more likeable than Ange and Tusk in the trainwreck of a show named Cross Ange, who used them as a ~~self-plagiarism~~ source of inspiration B-

SEED Destiny too... has been pretty alright so far. However, I do like Shinn's character. That man has definitely every reason to be as angry as he is... but I am fairly confident the show won't do too much with that. Speaking of Cagalli, wow, that is a massive downgrade in character writing compared to S1. Supposedly, there's IRL drama that caused that! C+

CITY is Nichijou 2, not much else to say about it. It doesn't quite live up to the predecessor, and with the shorter show run it probably never will, but it is undeniably still a good show. A

Dragon Ball Z - almost done with the Freeza fight. That was... pretty long. But consistently good, even though some previously impactful stuff, like people dying, is not much of a big deal now. A

Ranma 1/2 is also consistently entertaining. Not much else to say about it at this point. A

𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

I knew Gravity Falls was always a highly regarded show... but I did not expect it to be this good. There's an iconic cast of characters, compelling storytelling... it's just very very competent at what it sets out to do. A+

𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬

A challenging Super Robot Wars game in the year of our Lord 2025? One that has, so far, good writing? One that is available in a language I speak? Y is shockingly good. I've been on a binge this weekend. A+

Pretty neat. It also moves. And there was a projection on the wall of the shopping mall it's at, featuring Char, Amuro and Lalah. A neat place to wait for a bus at.

[Him and Earl the redneck are working on a truck engine] Hey Earl, did I show you that picture I got of Griffith from Berserk on my phone? The artist really captured his boyish charm, I wish he'd draw a doujin about it.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Yuyu Hakusho (1992), one of the all-time classics of shonen anime, featuring a teenage boy who is killed by a car to save a child and then given superpowers in recognition of his selflessness. He goes back to Earth and fights bad guys. Expect a lot of glowing and powering up to defeat smug villains and the like. Episodes 1 through 6 tonight.

After that is Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010), which is considered one of the best of DC’s direct-to-video animated films. Everyone’s favorite gigantically-chinned billionaire vigilante faces off against another masked crusader, the eponymous Red Hood, who ruthlessly kills criminals, believing that Batman’s no-kill policy dooms him to failure. Batman decides he must stop this new crime-fighter, but what’s this? Could the Red Hood’s true identity be someone Batman already knows? I guess we’ll find out. Director Brandon Vietti has done nothing but these DTV superhero films, and this is by far the most popular and highest-rated of them.

Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto is getting an anime anthology series of his early work on Amazon Prime. Tatsuki Fujimoto 17-26 adapts 8 short stories from the creator between the ages of 17 and 26.

Prime Video names and describes the 8 short stories as such:

A Couple Clucking Chickens Were Still Kickin' in the Schoolyard tells the tale of two survivors' bond in a post-apocalyptic world, while Sasaki Stopped a Bullet explores the intense emotions of adolescence. Love is Blind presents a sci-fi romantic comedy about love on a cosmic scale, and Shikaku follows an unhinged assassin girl's twisted love story. Mermaid Rhapsody weaves a touching romance between a boy and a mermaid centered around an underwater piano, whereas Woke-Up-as-a-Girl Syndrome delves into finding one's true self beyond gender norms. Nayuta of the Prophecy chronicles the journey of siblings bound by a harsh destiny, and Sisters depicts rivalry, conflict, and growth between artistically inclined sisters.

Several acclaimed directors, such as Tetsuaki Watanabe (Blue Lock), Nobuyuki Takeuchi (Fireworks, Should We See It from the Side or the Bottom?), and Kazuaki Terasawa (The Ancient Magus’ Bride season 2), are attached to the anthology, alongside animation studios: ZEXCS, Lapin Track, GRAPH77, 100studio, Studio Kafka, and P.A.WORKS. It also features a stacked voice cast, including Kensho Ono, Kana Hanazawa, Tomokazu Sugita, and Junichi Suwabe.

“Having my works from my student years being adapted into anime made me anxious, wondering if this was really okay, and if these works might have relied too heavily on others' inspiration.” said Fujimoto, creator of the original manga. “However, although I haven't seen them yet, I believe that through the work of talented directors, they have become proper, well-crafted pieces.”

Cant wait for this adaptation

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985), the sequel to Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), and the series that made Gundam into a national phenomenon. Expect a whole lot of robots fighting each other and war melodrama resulting thereof, as a task force assigned to clean up the remnants of an evil empire turns evil itself. Still considered one of the best Gundam series of them all. Episodes 43 through 50 tonight. We’re finishing the series.

After that is The Garden of Words (2013), an anime romance from Makoto Shinkai, the guy behind such hits as Your Name (2016) and Suzume (2022). A young man meets an older woman in a garden, and they begin the usual romance stuff, but she only appears on rainy days. Yep, that’s pretty much the whole premise, but, hey, it’s got good reviews, it’s popular, and it looks nice. A good comfy, short movie to follow the Gundam marathon.
