This is like talking to a brick wall. If you don’t have a job you still have those costs, so that means those costs are not work related so can’t be claimed as tax deductions

Let's see if I can break it down so that even you can understand it.

If I don't have any income I can't eat and will die.

If I have any income and I spend any of that income on food then any taxes I pay on that income I should be able to deduct the cost of that food because without that food I won't be able to pay taxes because I will be dead.

Any food I eat is absolutely related to any income I get. Without income I have no food and I die. Without food I will die and will not earn (or aquire) income. My ability to get income is 100% dependent on the cost of the food. It's absolutely related.

No food == no income.

got it?

You need to eat and pay rent even when you don’t have a job, therefore they’re not costs related to your income.

How do I eat and pay rent if I don't have a job?

That requires money right?

Where do I get that money?

Do I pay taxes on that money?

Do I need to eat and stay alive in order to get that income?

[-] BalpeenHammer@lemmy.nz 1 points 3 days ago

Because you’re not a business.

I know. That's not relevant.

None of those are costs associated with your job.

If I don't eat, if I don't have a place to live, if I can't use electricity or water or sewer I can't do my job.

If you didn’t have your job you would still be paying for those things.

If I didn't have a job I wouldn't be paying rent or utilities right?

Do unemployed people not need to eat?

how do they eat? Where do they get the money to eat? Do they pay taxes on that money?

You said a bunch of things. None of them made any sense.

Try again.

Why shouldn't I be allowed to deduct my utilities and rent just like a business does.

Austerity measures tend to do this.

I don't care if businesses are not people. That's not the topic. The topic is why they get to deduct expenses that I am not allowed to deduct.

[-] BalpeenHammer@lemmy.nz 1 points 6 days ago

I did answer it. I answered it two ways. One was that we could adjust the rates and tier them like we do for people. The other is that we could keep it the same but give the same benefits to people.

You don't like either answer so you keep lashing out like a child and throwing a tantrum and threatening me with futile useless gestures.

Grow up and act like an adult.

If a business gets to deduct their rent so should I. if a business gets to deduct their utilities so should I. if a business gets to deduct their mortgage so should I. If a business gets to depreciate their equipment and appliances so should I.

It's a simple fucking answer but you just don't like it because you think businesses should be taxed less than you and me.

How are you all enjoying your austerity regime?

Do you think the difficulties your child experiences should effect what we teach all children and how?

Apparently this happened three weeks ago and the news is just coming out now. Winston Peters as usual has no idea what is happening and is too busy licking Trump's boots to actually say or do anything.

I enjoy taking walks and am pretty lucky that there a numerous parks nearby where I can take nice long stroll. All of them have trash bins at the parking lots which are convenient for poo bags, drink bottles, snack wrappers etc. The problem is that they are all full all the time because people use them to dump their personal garbage. I have even seen appliances and car seats and such sitting next to them. Of course the council empties them once a week but sure enough the next day they are full again.

Maybe I ought to be grateful because many people seem to just ignore the bins and throw their trash all over the park too.

I really wish they would put cameras or something to discourage this kind of thing.

Recently I talked to three people who were ripped off by builders and tradies. One of them was out by more than a hundred thousand dollars, the others were in the tens of thousands of dollars.

People signed contracts and then didn't finish the job. In one case when confronted the builders said "you can't move in until I am done and if you don't accept this I won't be done for at least a year".

In the other case the contractor demanded double the money halfway into the build and contacted all other builders in the area and smeared the friend so that they didn't pick up the job.

In the third case the contractor took half the money up front, didn't show up for weeks, finally showed up for a few days and did a few things and the fucked right off. This was for about a 30K job.

Court costs are ten thousand dollars per day of trial (including prep work by the attorneys) so all of them had no choice but to take being ripped off. The tradie community seems pretty tight too so once you are ripped off you are known as a mark because all of them had issued with other tradies they hired afterwards.

Needless to say cops and the courts are useless.

Learn to do things on your own I guess. You can't trust any builder or tradie in NZ.

Housing is expensive, opportunities are disappearing, healthcare and education are being hollowed out.

This country is doomed but we have nobody to blame but ourselves. We voted for these bozos.

At least the trans people will not be allowed to poop in the bathroom they are presenting as so I guess that's something. We are going to show those trans people who is who and where they belong.

The Chinese and the Russians did it, the EU dropped the ball and trusted the US like fools.

Now they have to build their own search, maps, productivity and social media platforms.

Good news. They can use open source stuff.

But they won’t

What was wrong with libre?

There is lots of racism in NZ but it's mostly targeted at Maori, Chinese, and Indians (both Fijian and from India). If you are not one of those groups you should be mostly OK. I haven't seen too much hostility towards trans people so you should also be OK in that regard.

Be aware though, this is not an easy place to live. It's expensive as hell here and you'll be shocked at how much you are paying for food, utilities, rent and every day goods like clothes and electronics.

I have talked to countless expats and the number one thing they complain about is how impossible it is to make friends here. Kiwis are polite enough and nice enough for superficial interactions but they won't let you in their inner circles and become friends. Most expats are friends with other expats although not necessarily from the same country. Since you are in a marginal community I think this will be less of a problem for you. I presume the LGBTQ community will be more willing to embrace expats.

Having said all that I still think this is a great place to live. Just go into it with open eyes. Prepare well, bring in a shit ton of money and all your goods. You will regret not bringing something when you try to replace it and it costs triple what you paid for it.
