So I've read all 4 issues. I have MANY questions as a casual comic book reader.

First question......WHAT THE FUCK???

No, seriously. Have you read these issues? Seriously! What the fuck????

Ok, so first off.....I guess Peter Parker always at some point had parents. He had to be born to someone. But this series is portraying Peter as having been close to them before. WHAT??? The story is always they died when he was too young to remember them. He's always searching for some clues to figuring out who they were. And I don't mean their identity. I mean finding out who they were as people. Multiple iterations of Spiderman I've seen Peter look through newspaper articles, records, ect ect ect just to learn about them. But here, Peters just like "Yeah, my parents were close. Until they died."

Oh. And did I mention his parents were SECRET AGENT SPIES???? I refer you back to my original question. WHAT THE FUUUUCK???

On top of all that, Spiderman is now just in the black spider suit. And he just accepts it. He should be freaking the fuck out. He knows how dangerous this thing is. Nope! He just accepts it.

Oh, and as he's getting stabbed and beaten, he gets saved by.....HIS SUPER HERO SISTER????

WHEN THE FUCK HAS PETER PARKER EEEEEEEVER HAD A SISTER????

I REFER YOU BACK TO MY OPENING QUESTION!!!!

WHAT

THE

FUCK???

I had planned to make a post of selections from inside but honestly it was pretty boring and mediocrely drawn without being funny bad so I skipped it.

The cover is by far the best and most baffling part of the comic. I'm convinced it's a trace over of some horror genre cover. There are "giant stormtroopers" (they just look like normal stormtroopers but are called giant in dialog) who appear in the very last page in the comic to abduct Leia, but it's much more boring looking than this and happens in space.

These Savage Shores is stellar. If you don't want to wait, there's already an ultimate edition:

European vampire gets a notion to go hunting in India and learns... there are worse things than vampires!

Money Shot is gloriously not safe for work.

NGL, I'm a little bit bummed that Heathen isn't included in this. That Viking story was great!

Whew! New week already? What's up this time?

Catacomb Of Torment #2 - New EC line still going strong!

Detective Comics #1100 - I don't typically buy Detective, but #1000 was a special issue and it looks like they're doing something fancy again.

Department Of Truth #33

ElfQuest The Original Quest Volume 3 - Reprinting the original Elfquest run in really nice hardcovers.

Event Horizon Dark Descent #1 - Not for me, but worth noting we're getting a comic in the "Event Horizon" universe.

Falling In Love On The Path To Hell #9

Justice League Red #1 (Of 6) - Latest in the Justice League minis following Question, Atom Project and Challengers of the Unknown, this time setting up an espionage team. Could be interesting. Red Canary is typically fun!

Hyde Street #8

Los Monstruos #4 (Of 4) - LA Detective noire with Universal style monsters!

Space Ghost/Jonny Quest Space Quest #4

Spider-Girl #3

They Choose Violence #3 (Of 5) - Hardcore revenge thriller! Had a rough start with a misprinted #1, but solid since then!

This Ends Tonight #2 (Of 3)

Let's see what looks good this week!

Batman Gotham By Gaslight A League For Justice #2 (Of 6) - Following the last Gaslight mini... Original plan was 12 issues, but they split it in half.

Black Kiss Omnibus HC (adult) - I had no idea this was coming... Back in the 80s, Howard Chaykin did an adults only kind of detective noir kind of thing. Sin City before Sin City. Worth a look if you aren't easily offended! Collects Black Kiss #1-12, Black Kiss 2 #1-6, the Black Kiss XXXMas in July Special, and all new for this book Black Kiss Halloween. Not for you if you're bothered by strong language and naked people doing naked people things!

Blood Type #3 (Of 4) - ECs all Vampire book!

Fantastic Four #2 - Yet another reboot!

Future Is ****** #4 - Most utopian looking and dystopian feeling book I've ever seen.

Giant-Size X-Men #2 - Ending this years run of the Giant Size run.

Golden Rage Mother Knows Best #5 (Of 5) - Final issue! Grandmas island with a baby to the death!

Space Ghost Volume 2 #1

Spider-Man And Wolverine #4 - Pete and Logan's backstory.

Trinity Daughter Of Wonder Woman #3 (Of 6) - Just a delight!

Ultimate Spider-Man Incursion #3 (Of 5)

Ultimates #15

X-Men #20

13
10

Martian Manhunter's narration includes the phrase “that is not dead which can eternal lie,” a direct nod to H.P. Lovecraft's "The Call of Cthulhu", where Lovecraft describes the ancient entity's immortal nature.

The series is set in a dystopian, alternate-history United States divided into seven nations

The storyline focuses on the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and the imminent end of the world. The tagline for the series is "The things that divide us are stronger than the things that unite us". The plot explores the tension between the inevitability of the apocalypse and the persistent hope for a different future.

The story follows Grant McKay, a renegade scientist who, along with his team and family, embarks on a dangerous journey through various dimensions of the "Eververse" using his creation, "the Pillar". Unfortunately, the Pillar is sabotaged, trapping the team as they randomly jump through increasingly perilous and hostile dimensions.

First, let me say, I'm an absolute sucker for European style graphic novels. So when I caught On Mars_ at my local shop, I thumbed through it... Yeah, I'm in.

Dystopian future, criminals are used as slave labor to build a colony on Mars. The story follows a new prisoner, sent to Mars for 20 years. As a police officer, she accidentally killed a kid, the daughter of an influential politician.

The prison colony is full of gangs, religious fanatics, and escapees operating in the wild.

Through the three sections, she encounters these multiple groups and struggles to survive. Until someone decides to overthrow the power structure and take over everything for themselves.

It's honestly, a GREAT read, I had no problem with it at all until the last few pages.

spoilerThe religious fanatics attempt a coup and part of this involves bringing in a ship and drones controlled by them.

The protagonist of the story fights them to a standstill, finds a hacker character to take over control of the new drones, and... then he has the new drones kill everyone. THE END!

There's maybe 3, 4 more pages after that and I kept reading hoping for a fakeout... there isn't one. Our dude was damaged enough to off himself and everyone else on Mars.

HUGE downer of an ending, not sure what they're going for there. It's not like Snowpiercer where you know the downer ending is coming, it just comes out of left field. "And then they all died!"

List is up! Let's see here..

Toxie Team-Up #2 - Definitely missed #1, oops!

Blood Brother's Mother #4

Dread The Hall H #1

Catacomb Of Torment #1 - I'll try it, wasn't too keen on Epitaphs though, was more preachy than scary. If this follows suit I'll stick with Creepshow (which I'm for sure following regardless. Love Creepshow.)

Welp that's it for me, what're you pulling?

Just got home from it... Tonally, Gunn absolutely nails it. The main characters are perfectly done, the B-list characters like Mister Terriffic and Metamorpho are perfectly done.

There are issues with some of the C-list / background characters.

Hawkgirl didn't really have much to do and I don't think Gunn knew what to do with her, which is a shame. Giving her a hawk shriek instead of actual dialog was... a choice. She needed more speaking lines.

Similarly, the background characters at the Planet, Cat Grant, Steve Lombard, were just kind of "there". Nobody, not even Perry White, has a "Hey, where's Clark?" moment. I think Gunn was just working from a checklist of who to include.

Ma Kent... I don't know where she's from, but it aint Kansas... Loved the Kents interactions with Clark, but... OK, I'm biased, I married a woman from Kansas, I've been to both Oklahoma and Kansas... I don't know what that accent is.

All of those are minor quibbles. It was a great way to do Superman.

Now: Spoilers:

spoilerEaster egg reference to Mister Mxyzptlk. Lois and Clark are having a serious conversation while outside the window Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl and Mister Terriffic are fighting a giant glowing eyeball. "Oh, it's just an extra-dimensional imp, they got this."

Setting up Supergirl - Krypyo is her dog, Supes is just pet-sitting while she runs off to a red-sun planet so she can get plastered. The opening of Woman of Tomorrow.

With Mister Terrific and Metamorpho in the same movie, we've now had 1/2 of "The Terriffics", all we need now are Plastic Man and Phantom Girl(!)

A place to discuss comic books of all types, from old to new, Big 2 to indie, and everything in between.

Floppies, graphic novels, compilations, omnibusses (omnibusi?) are all fair game.

There is only one rule:*

Comic Books is a no judgement zone.

You can talk all you want about how Rob Liefeld is trash, Bob Kane is an asshole, or Frank Miller and Dave Sim’s politics have made them toxic, that’s all good.

If, however, another user is LEGITIMATELY a fan of something you don’t like, that does NOT make them a lesser person. Attack the art for being bad, not the person for being a fan of bad art.

* I lied. There are TWO rules... No piracy. Cover shots? That's good. Interior pages, in moderation? Sure. Full books? Links to pirate sites? That's how we get things shut down. :(

I'm not saying it's been a problem, because it hasn't been.
