I recently gotten back into reading comics and mostly I am reading series that have ended. I am wondering what I can subscribe to, while supporting my local shop, that is currently running and you think will be great when looked back on.

Immortal Thor just launched last month, and given Al Ewing's track record, it promises to go down as a legendary run. His Immortal Hulk most definitely was.

John Michael Straczynski just started a run on Captain America and I have high hopes for that as well.

Other than that, it's not a recent launch and it's on hiatus right now, but The Department of Truth is already legendary and has been optioned for TV.

Immortal Thor and the new Cap run are solid options for series that just started. Predator/Wolverine just started as well and may interest you. Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham just started and should be four issues. Transformers from Skybound, Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong, and Giant Robot Hellboy also come out next month.

Wonder Woman and Flash just started new runs with relatively high profile creators.

Also Kyle Higgins’ Massiveverse stuff is pretty cool.

If you like specific IP (eg Star Trek, Witcher, whatever), publishers like IDW, Dark Horse, and Dynamite always have good stuff. Image probably has a few good things; I’ve heard nice stuff about W0rldtr33 as well as Department of Truth and Killadelphia (which were both up for Eisners). You can look at recent industry awards like the Eisners to get a sense for books the industry thinks are worth purchasing.

I'm sorta new to comics and I'm a degenerate weirdo who prefers alternative comics or underground comix as opposed to super heroes.

That said, if you like sorta surrealist horror, Ice Cream Man is a good one (and what started my addiction), 37 comes out oct (25th iirc).

Creepshow is doing a vol 2 right now (wasn't a huge fan of issue 1 because the first comic is literally just an eye-roll inducing lazy writing "dunk on conservatives" piece and I refuse to be manipulated into pretending it was good simply because I agree politically. Huge fan of Vol 1 though and can't wait for Vol. 2 issue 2.)

The Sacrificers is just getting started (issue 3 out this week) but so far it has me hooked. They use words fairly sparingly, instead trying to tell the story through the images moreso, but "in a good way."

Coda Vol. 2 is just starting too, the first (13th) issue came out like 2w ago iirc. Post apocalyptic high fantasy. Just recently got all the back issues and got caught up, Vol 1 was fantastic and Vol 2 looks like it'll carry that torch just fine.

Rare Flavours also just started, about a Rakshaasa that wants to be the next Bourdain. Liked the first issue a lot, can't wait for issue 2.

Honorable mentions:

Fishflies is guaranteed to only be 6 issues, but it is technically currently ongoing lol, and it is good so far as of issue 2.

And not a comic but a magazine, if you like comix, I just subbed to R. Crumb's current publication (idt he owns it but they publish his new works.) I'm pretty sure I'm the only one here who wants it and I don't want to blow up their spot too hard considering the controversial nature of some of the things the artists have drawn, but it is out there!

A place to discuss comic books of all types, from old to new, Big 2 to indie, and everything in between.

Floppies, graphic novels, compilations, omnibusses (omnibusi?) are all fair game.

There is only one rule:*

Comic Books is a no judgement zone.

You can talk all you want about how Rob Liefeld is trash, Bob Kane is an asshole, or Frank Miller and Dave Sim’s politics have made them toxic, that’s all good.

If, however, another user is LEGITIMATELY a fan of something you don’t like, that does NOT make them a lesser person. Attack the art for being bad, not the person for being a fan of bad art.

* I lied. There are TWO rules... No piracy. Cover shots? That's good. Interior pages, in moderation? Sure. Full books? Links to pirate sites? That's how we get things shut down. :(

I'm not saying it's been a problem, because it hasn't been.
