Ottawa has said it would respond with countermeasures should the tariffs materialize

U.S. President Donald Trump still plans to make good on his promise to issue tariffs on Canada and Mexico on Saturday, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Tuesday.

Leavitt said Trump is also still weighing fresh tariffs on China for Saturday.

Trump said last week he would announce 25 per cent tariffs on Mexico and Canada on Feb. 1 unless the countries help tackle the twin issues of U.S. fentanyl trafficking and immigration.

Canadian officials have said Ottawa would respond with countermeasures should Trump's tariffs materialize.

Let’s be honest, nothing will make him decide to lift these.

All we can do is retaliate with prejudice and move closer to Europe. I’d go scorched earth.

The US isn’t our allies anymore.

And we will counter Tarif, as we should, and both countries will be worse off!

I would love to see everyone just throw a heavy tariff on the US.

And we will counter Tarif, as we should, and both countries will be worse off!

Prices will go up, Trump will later pretend to be a hero by ending Obama's Tariffs, prices will go down slightly (not nearly as much as they went up by), and the American Oligarchs profit from the inflation.

Even if we don't counter with Tariffs both countries will be worst off. Volatility of the situation alone means that most people don't want to commit to anything.

The next step in this is probably him carving exceptions for very select companies that'll either pay him off or just go straight in his pocket

My first reaction to this was "fix my problems for me or I'll charge you" but then I noticed it said "immigration" not "illegal immigration". Trump wants Canada and Mexico to prevent anyone in the world from moving to the US. This is the responsibility of other countries for some reason.

Why is anybody taking anything coming out of the White House with any degree of certainty? Tariffs or not there’s no trusting the source. We’ll know if it happens when it happens.
