I feel like this is a missed opportunity to spread the good news of the many other Latin pronunciation systems, particularly the traditional English system from which we get most of the English scientific pronuciations :)

Wow, i never realised how bastardized our pronunciations are in english lol. It's very subconscious though, since we've normalized these words as english.

Botanical latin's pronunciation:

Every vowel is pronounced, except diphthongs, which are treated as single long vowels.

Ooof. That reminds me my mum saying "Coelogyne" (an orchid genus). It throws me a curveball:

  • Ecclesiastical - [tʃe.lɔ.'dʒi.nɛ]
  • regional (Portuguese speakers) - [se.lo.'ʒi.ne]~[se.lo.'ʒi.ni]
  • her pronunciation - [se.lo.'dʒi.ne]

Then I spend a few seconds thinking "selodine... no, that's not right" because the local dialect parses [dʒi] as /di/.

At least I don't have this problem with the Paphiopedilum. She simply calls them "sapatinho" (little shoe).
