The "now" of this comic is actually 2014, almost a decade ago.

Wonder what the actual "now" cell would contain today. I guess a screenshot of this comment about it being a decade old.

2014 wasn't a decade... ago, oh my fucking god.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

As far as I'm concerned, it was the 90s about a month ago.

[-] Speculater@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

That's it, I'm going to my local skate shop and buying a skateboard. Electric of course, because my knees are fucking shot.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

The fact that there are still skate shops proves my point. I truly am 2 Legit 2 Quit.

But how to decode that data. Better hope they find some info on character encodings too.

[-] Genrawir@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

That, and it would be in portrait mode, with a video playing. And ads taking up a third or the screen.

[-] dandroid@dandroid.app 7 points 1 year ago

That explains why there was no 2010s panel

[-] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 year ago

TikTok, and not being able to break away from it

[-] SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 year ago

It would contain just a big "E"

[-] SolarNialamide@lemm.ee 8 points 1 year ago

Deep fried memes were also 5 years ago though

[-] SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 year ago

No, not deep fried, surreal or absurd

[-] dopeshark@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Same thing, but on a phone :v

[-] FLX@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

2010's = You show your IRL friends the cool fresh meme you found

2020's = Endless doomscrolling to escape a dystopian, sick & crumbling world

2030's = 💥 💀

2040's = The Missing Decade

2050's =
divulgâche🐱‍🐉⚔️🐒

That's the point of the comic, it would basically just be the same panel with more ads each time. We're caught in a techno-cultural recursion.

Think about the difference between pre-smart phone and post-smart phone. Now think about the difference between the last generations of iphones.

Time enjoyed is not wasted.

I keep trying to get this through to my wife, who burns herself out frequently with some dire consequences.

Memes are free. Everything else is a subscription.

It's suicide by meme

[-] Mikelius@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 year ago

Facebook??? Think I remember MySpace having most of the 2000s. Even then, I used Yahoo!, AIM, and MSN way more lol.

Son of a bitch!

[-] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

You're not allowed to do this to me 😭

[-] criticon@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 year ago

Instead of tamagochi it should be messenger

[-] Trollception@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Messenger? Like blackberry messenger or something?

[-] PM_ME_FEET_PICS@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago

MSN messenger likely. But that didn't come out until 1999.

[-] criticon@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

msn messenger mostly, but also mIRQ and stuff like that

Edit: damn I just discovered that msn messenger was introduced in 1999. I thought it was older
