The photos are getting increasingly more random don't you think

I suspect someone’s laptop was hacked and they have access to her camera.

I read somewhere that it's a peertube streamer

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 5 points 1 week ago

Once again: I want to be able to turn off people's ability to PM me. Checks for "accepting PMs" doesn't even have to be in the codebase for every type of fediverse server code; but each instance that decided against PMs, they could check incoming messages vs the recipient and, if rejected, simply send back a message saying "This user is not accepting PMs."

maybe a setting to only allow DMs from people that you have interacted with before (upvote, comment).

I'd love to be able to disable PMs. No one has any reason to PM me on Lemmy as far as I'm concerned.

I think this is the answer.

At best this is spam, at worst lemmy is being used to harass this person.

Not knowing anything about the lemmy codebase, I also suspect it would be the easiest solution to implement.

my suggestion is to identify

  • which instances are used for these spam accounts
  • which IP addresses are used for these spam accounts
[–] 30p87@feddit.org 8 points 1 week ago

For getting the IP you'd need the cooperation of the - afaik mostly were small - instances.

[–] Vopyr@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

which instances are used for these spam accounts

is.hardlywork.ing? probably more.

which IP addresses are used for these spam accounts

There is a high probability that the spammer is using a VPN.

[–] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago

Identifying is a lost cause. She changes to common instances all the time, so we aren't going to defederate because of that.

IP address may or may not be possible, but iirc she changes it using residential proxies.

Best course of action is regex and disabling images in DMs.

Can’t wait until lemmy is big and there’s hundreds / thousands of spammers

[–] protist@mander.xyz 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Has anyone tried engaging in discord or matrix, as requested?

I have tried engaging in Matrix. I think I managed to convince the spammer to add a Monero wallet, lol.

[–] AlexisFR@jlai.lu 6 points 1 week ago

There is nothing that can be done at the moment, other than joining an instance that does not federate with new instances by default.

Get her a boyfriend?

It happened to me when I made a post in showerthoughts (which was removed lol for being political). I was getting 1-2 Nicole messages per day. After my post was removed I stopped receiving them. It must go through certain communities and message recent posters. Before that, I had never received a Nicole message. It probably ignores comments. Idk.

Edit: my post on showerthoughts was up for a few days.

I got my first Nicole after I replied to someone on lemmyshitpost so I think you're on to something.
