Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Expect more of this in the USA as everything falls apart.

Also expect people to just start dumping used oil anywhere and everywhere, like in the same bodies of water they're fishing from.

Just start to expect the air you breathe the water you drink the food you eat to generally be poisoned.

Flint, Michigan style water crises coming to a city near you!

like in the same bodies of water they're fishing from.

Like they did back then. Which then lead to large burning bodies of water. Which then lead to regulations.

Exactly my point. Kinda frustrated with how many people in this thread are pro-poisoning-the-environment because "fuck you, I do what I want."

Yeah the Cuyahoga river in Cleveland caught fire due to all the pollution back in the day. It's what started the EPA.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

Oh it happened a few times

All fun and games until it sinks and adds to the contaminants in the lake.

[–] BagOfHeavyStones@piefed.social 15 points 2 weeks ago

If the front falls off.

[–] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

And then it's still fun and games

[–] abbotsbury@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Littering is wrong, actually.

This seems like a relatively low priority thing to get upset over. Godspeed you, upside down truck cap boat man.

[–] Master@lemm.ee 6 points 2 weeks ago

Truck cap boats guys neighbor can go fuck himself!

Obviously I don't know where this is or what the rules are there. I think though in some places this is not illegal as it's a small electric motor that can't go fast. But that's just my thoughts this morning. Also, where there's a will there's a way, and good luck to him, awesome ingenuity.

I'd hope that there are laws for what coating you can have on your boat. Slowly leaching heavy metals and paint chemicals into the lake probably isn't good for the ecosystem.

[–] DiaDeLosMuertos@aussie.zone 8 points 2 weeks ago

Interesting take on registering a boat. I agree with your philosophy regarding nasties in the water. Sad to say that any kind of run-off will probably have lots of ugly things in it. And I mean it's not like all boats are completely without harm to ecosystems really.

[–] Kit@lemmy.blahaj.zone 20 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

In my state you need to register every watercraft, even canoes and kayaks

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 23 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Is this in the US, land of the free?

[–] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 19 points 2 weeks ago

No free means have guns and allow children to use them as well as having a deep relationship between a political judge and deep payments to make laws that help the class war finish up the stragglers

[–] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

The free to fuck the land up I guess.

[–] AndrasKrigare@beehaw.org 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I think this is pretty common, I think part of the reason is so that you don't accidentally introduce critters/eggs from one body of water to another

[–] DiaDeLosMuertos@aussie.zone 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I don't mean to be a dick, but how does registering a vessel stop that ?

[–] AndrasKrigare@beehaw.org 3 points 2 weeks ago

Definitely a fair question; at least for the large bodies of water near me, before they let you park and take your vessel in, they check the registration on it. I'm doing that, they can check what other bodies of water you've taken the vessel to and how recently, and can then determine whether or not it's safe for you to bring it into that one.

I don't actually know what the recourse is if it's not safe, if they make you spray it down thoroughly there, or completely refuse entry, or something else. My information here is from a vague memory of a sign at a lake parking area that was titled "Why do I need to register?" or something like that.

Funny, cause "F U I do what I want" would be my line as I throw firecrackers in the water... fish now, dick.

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 5 points 2 weeks ago

That is one cool boat
