Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

Trump signing an illegal executive order?

I don't believe it ...

Regardless of Putin invading Ukraine being illegal, and Israel genociding Palestinians being illegal, and pretty much everything Trump has done in 2025 being illegal, I have faith that the rule of law will miraculously apply in this situation for some reason.

Legality doesn't matter when you have no ability or will to enforce it.

His ability to enforce a "block this state law" instruction is one of those things which might actually be limited by the law.

All of what he's doing is limited by law, but nobody cares enough to enforce it. All leftist judges and politicians are in it for their own skin, minus a very small sliver. They have only words to offer instead of real action. We've let money and safety become our new Gods. America has no sense of identity or unity and until we figure that out we're on a downward trajectory. All of us pleebs are in for a rude awakening.

They're mostly constrained by not having the votes in Congress or the Supreme Court to actually do anything. That's why we get words and protests from them instead of meaningful action.

You're extending an olive branch to our ineffectual old, white, lawyer, elitist Dems? Interesting strategy. We'll see how that pays off. I'm all for it in reality. The tower needs to fall before we can rebuild it. It won't be pretty, but as each day passes seems more and more necessary.

It's ILLEGAL? Phew! Good! THAT will stop it!

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

Of course it is fucking illegal.

"~~Why~~ Trump's executive order targeting state climate laws is ~~probably~~ illegal"

I'm sure all the "states rights" people will strongly opposed such an order, by leaving the country and going to war if necessary, right?

[–] Wytch@lemmy.cafe 2 points 1 week ago

I just assume that at this point everything he's doing is illegal
