In the op-ed, McMahon says, “Why? Not because we want to be unkind to student borrowers. Borrowing money and failing to pay it back isn’t a victimless offense. Debt doesn’t go away; it gets transferred to others. If borrowers don’t pay their debts to the government, taxpayers do.”

But when businesses need a bailout...

Also, hilarious coming from this administration. How many bankruptcies has Trump been involved in?

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago

And we all know the rich don't pay taxes so...

[–] Takumidesh@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

Debt is a concept not a physical thing, there isn't anything intrinsic about it that must make it transfer to others.

If I'm ok with forgiving $5 they my friend owes me for lunch, that doesn't make the debt mysteriously transfer to a 3rd party.

Yea, we know. When is the last time a Republican administration did anything to help regular people? Or anything that might be good for the economy?

Doesn't happen.

[–] azimir@lemmy.ml 16 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Every time the Republicans get control of the government they fuck over my current career trajectory. They'd been nothing but harmful to me and my family for three decades now.

[–] Wahots@pawb.social 2 points 5 days ago

Whole generations of young people, and older people just retiring now. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, it's usually very interesting when historic leaders have pissed off massive amounts of their constituents.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 2 points 5 days ago

they fuck over everyones career trajectory, mainly in stem, which is now under serious attack.

Same, absolutely!

[–] RagingSnarkasm@lemmy.world 37 points 6 days ago (5 children)

Wait, I thought we were getting rid of the Dept. of Education?

[–] Jode@midwest.social 18 points 6 days ago

Nah just renaming it to the "Department of Extortion"

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 17 points 6 days ago (1 children)

They recently found out that there are a lot of people who owe the DoE money, so they decided to keep it around for a while

[–] j0ester@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I thought they were moving those loans to a different department? I should ask A1.

Clearly, the steaks have been raised

[–] Prox@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago

Only the parts that were actually helpful to real people. All the bad shit remains.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 points 5 days ago

trump kept the loan part alive long enough for the companies to recoup thier payments.

[–] GrassCat@lemmy.world 35 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (2 children)

The US is THIRTY-SEVEN TRILLION DOLLARS in debt. We would have to pay off that money first before we ever get to any new debt incurred from the forgiveness of student loans.

These people are neither honest nor credible. This is class warfare on behalf of the oligarchy to keep the lower classes subjected deep in servitude.

[–] MDCCCLV@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I don't understand your statement, the student debt is already there held by the government and theoretically they plan their future revenue for the budget with payments from student loan borrowers included. So forgiving student loan debt would just be a decrease in revenue while they continue to have the same amount of debt.

[–] GrassCat@lemmy.world -1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

I don’t believe that you fail to understand how incurring more national debt being called unacceptable from the clowncult that has exploded our debt to THIRTY-SEVEN TRILLION dollars of giveaways in actual capital to the ultrawealthy ownership/rentier class is utter two-faced poor character trash. If you can’t recognize this, you’re simply a useful idiot carrying water for the rentier/ownership class in their warfare to keep the masses subservient. You suck. Do better.

[–] MDCCCLV@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 days ago

But it's not adding new debt, the federal government already holds that debt. I'm not clear if you understand that.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

we can do that by reducing the defense budget, oh wait they dont want to and overbloated police union funding.

[–] Rustic_Fry@literature.cafe 18 points 5 days ago (1 children)

No mass forgiveness, only mass shootings.

[–] EstonianGuy@lemm.ee 8 points 5 days ago

Dont forget mass deportations

[–] obscureprodigy@pawb.social 20 points 6 days ago (1 children)

that’s fine. i’m not paying.

[–] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

They are able to intercept any tax refunds and garnish your wages. Just so you're not surprised. Once they put you in collections, it's not really optional

[–] obscureprodigy@pawb.social 17 points 5 days ago (2 children)

then they’ll have to do that because i am not willingly paying shit.

[–] gndagreborn@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)
