For reference, the article does point out the following:

The United States said it was discussing with relief agencies how "safe areas" could be set up for civilians in Gaza. "One of the things that we did discuss with [Israel] was the need to protect civilian lives in Gaza, the need to establish some safe areas, where civilians could relocate to be safe from Israel's legitimate security operations," said a senior U.S. State Department official in briefing reporters. "So we've been engaged with the International Committee for the Red Cross, the UN relief agencies to work through the details of what that might look like. It's still work that's coming together. The Israelis are committed to it," the official said.

The article also provides a map of the total evacuation area, which I assume was also provided to the Palestinians. Given that this evacuation area only applies to the north of the Gaza strip, I would assume that the evacuees could flee to the south. I'm not arguing that this is practical given the circumstances, but there technically are places to go.

Please correct me if there is extra information that would suggest that evacuation to the south is also not an option. There's a lot of information out there regarding this situation, and I am not at all fully educated on the matter.

Gaza city is a city within the Gaza strip. Israel told them to evacuate south of wadi Gaza. It’s obviously impractical for all those people to evacuate in reasonable time but they do have where to go.

Israel has a nasty habit of bombing the very places they tell civilians to go to.

Even if it was logisticaly possible for every Palestinian to evacuate to the Northern half of the Gaza Strip, even if Israel didn't bomb areas they demanded the residents to flee to; based on Israel's history we know what would happen: Israeli settlers would rush in to claim the land.

It would be far more honest if the Israeli government just came out and said what we all know they are about to do: Massacre every man, woman, and child in Gaza.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Israel's military told some one million Palestinians living in Gaza on Friday to evacuate the north, according to the United Nations, an unprecedented order for almost half the population of the sealed-off territory ahead of an expected ground invasion against the ruling Hamas militant group.

The evacuation order, which includes Gaza City, home to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, sparked confusion among civilians and aid workers already running from Israeli airstrikes and contending with a total siege and a territory-wide power blackout.

The Israeli military sent one evacuation order directly Friday morning, warning the residents of Gaza City to flee south in the narrow coastal territory, which is just 40 kilometres long.

The UN said the broad evacuation warning it received for all of Gaza's north also applies to all UN staff and to the hundreds of thousands who have taken shelter in UN schools and other facilities since Israel launched round-the-clock airstrikes Saturday.

"The U.S. Department of Defence stands fully ready to deploy additional assets if necessary," Austin told a news conference in Tel Aviv with his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant.

Egypt, which made peace with Israel decades ago and has long served as a regional mediator, is staunchly opposed to resettling Palestinians on its territory, both because of the costs involved and because it would undermine their quest for an independent state.
