I've always considered it a good practice to buy as local as possible while still getting the things I want, but I needed the added incentive of Fuck Trump to make a habit of it.

Just booked a flight to south of the US. Even the most direct flight had a layover. I could have saved hundreds of dollars if that layover was in the US. I opted to pay hundreds of dollars more to have the layover in Mexico.
It was partways about Elbows Up, but it was also I'd rather not get arrested and/or detained and/or deported possibly to an El Salvadorian prison. Avoiding the the non-zero chance of that is worth $500.
You should hope that the plane doesn't have to make an emergency landing in the US, because then they can do whatever they want with you. I seem to recall that (about 10 years ago?) the US actually forced an overflying plane to land so they could seize a man the knew was on the flight.
Yes, this has absolutely been a thought for me. I am not removing accounts, etc. from my phone pre-emptively, but I will uninstall things like Lemmy and remove specific email accounts if we have to land. (I use multiple emails for different reasons, so it won't be terribly suspicious.)
It's hard for me to buy Canadian as I live in Japan, but I do my damdest to not buy American. The latter is not that hard because we have domestic brands for pretty much anything American brands offer — from electronics to snacks.
I just have to be mindful where my meat and produce come from and I also check for main ingredients in processed foods. If my Japanese soy milk says it uses US soy, then it goes back on the shelf. If it just says "imported" instead of the country of origin, then it also goes back on the shelf for safe measure.
I stopped using Reddit and I'm looking for alternatives to Google as I pay for their cloud storage.
I just saw the Tampa fan in Toronto wearing a 51 face paint and it made me livid. Definitely boosted my resolution to keep boycotting these assholes.
Nearby to you over in Korea. I'm also trying hard here to avoid American. I've wholly stopped drinking American whisky when I go out, which my local bartenders have noticed and are actually willing to share the issue with customers who ask, and a few others have joined up in support which is kind.
Sorry, but what's the 51 thing?
Referring to Canada as the 51st state.
51st state. Trump wants Canada to be the 51st state.
Oh, right.
Something so incredibly dumb I pushed it out of my brain apparently.
Normally I wouldn't post a Fox News link, but this is funny. Canadian-born actor William Shatner snarked live on TV about the Trump plan of Canada becoming the 51st state and called on PM Mark Carney to make a counter proposal.
Shatner: “Do a real estate deal! Make a counter offer! Let’s offer — Canada offer — to the United States to be the eleventh province! Think of the joy! … It’s the best thing!”
Fox News host Jesse Watters [laughing]: “He should have said that. ... That would have brought the house down.”
Shatner: “I mean, everybody is so serious about what is an un-serious offer ... Canada’s been around for a hundred fifty years ...”
Watters: “Isn’t it about persistence? ... “Carney says, it’s not for sale ... Trump says never say never ...”
Shatner: “At a certain point, persistence becomes insulting!
Here is the Fox News link to the video (Shatner appears at ~3 min).
Oh I saw a pic of this Tampa fan who had the nerve to have 51 (as in 51st State) face painted on his inbred face. Made me so mad.
Yeah I apparently completely shut the whole 51st state crap out if my brain, that should have been obvious.
As an american.... I support your efforts to avoid american products.
And those sorts of morons we are infested with.
The longer it goes on the easier it becomes.
Retailers are following the money and seeking out more Canadian supply to put on their shelves.
Manufacturers are increasing their output, or are diverting supply fthat they previously sent south.
And regular folks are voting with their wallets and making new buying habits - habits that, once established, will need some impetus to break when/if the US regains its sanity.
A little longer and it will be more than just a sentiment. It will be a way of life.
It already is. The folks at the stores here even let you know right away when you pick up an american product. No shame just point it out and offer suggestions otherwise. I'm certain corporate has directed this. It only makes good business sense.
Most of you may know this already: https://buycanadianmart.ca/
Addition:
Canadian retailers are seeing a surge in domestic sales amid the ‘Buy Canadian’ movement -- (April 2025)
The “Buy Canadian” movement is already delivering promising results across the retail sector. Major retailers such as Loblaws Companies have reported a 10 per cent increase in sales of Canadian-made products. Sobey’s parent company Empire also noted a decline in sales of U.S.-sourced goods.
Importantly, the shift isn’t limited to big retailers or headline product categories. Smaller retailers and established brands are also seeing tangible benefits.
Love it. Let’s keep this going.
Elbows up, long term.
I hope it's true, but unlike in the beginning, I'm starting to see more people buying American produce (strawberries, lettuce, etc.) again.
This won't work if we half-ass it, guys.
