Scrolling a list is a terrible UI, it doesn’t matter how cute the clicks are. Looking at you Apple.

[–] usualsuspect191@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 day ago (4 children)

The extra layer to this is using a pic of the show with Bob Barker, even though Drew Carrey will be coming up on 18 years hosting the show this fall.

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

or those of us that know who Bill Cullen is as we scroll to 1957.

[–] dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago

And drew, though I like him a lot, is a way shittier host for the price is right. I only know Drew Carrey from the drew Carrey show, from which Mimi was the actual star... so you can date me how you like and it may or may not be more accurate than carbon dating.

I miss Whose Line.

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

I was gonna say there may be people on here that never have seen barker on price is right

[–] SidewaysHighways@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

any recommendations? in a perfect world, ergonomic with trackball?

[–] gnuplusmatt@reddthat.com 2 points 1 day ago

I have a Logitech Mx Master 3 on my home machine, a keychron m6 at work, both can put the wheel into free spinning scroll.

I have a Logitech Ergo MX575 on my couch PC, its a trackball, but its scroll wheel doesn't free spin

[–] plumbercraic@lemmy.sdf.org 23 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I remember the first time I had to scroll. Oh boy that was a while ago

I REMEMBER 1986. My god's man. When did everyone get so young all of a sudden?

Yup. ‘86 is still alive. All the movies, music, etc. Going to see Devo, OMD, New Order and others this summer.

[–] sfled@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Doomscrolling to my birth year, and still no jet pack.

[–] BreadAndThread@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I got my driver's license that year. It was glorious.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I got mine in ‘87. Hello fellow old person.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Same with choosing a country.

I remember when the internet was enough us-centric (or accurately localized) so “United States of America” was at the top of the list. Now I have to scroll way to the bottom. I guess I can’t argue about the fairness of it, but it’s still annoying.

With all the annoyances of everything needing to be thousands of JavaScript modules instead of a simple html page, can’t we get something useful out of it, like a localized country list where everyone gets theirs on top?

[–] tiramichu@lemm.ee 17 points 2 days ago (2 children)

And then being from England being constantly guessing because I have no idea whether the drop down is going to list England, United Kingdom, Great Britain, or what.

Each of which refer to actually different geographical regions, but okay.

[–] rocketpoweredredneck@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Y'all should just rename your country to Greated Kingland and make life easier for everyone

[–] KSPAtlas@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 day ago

The country is called the United Kingdom, the island is called Great Britain, the group of islands including Ireland (the island) and Great Britain is called the British Isles, and England is one of the constituent countries of the UK

To make it even more confusing, some languages, like Polish, call the United Kingdom the equivalent of "Great Britain"

You can often press “U” to go to countries starting with “U”, saving a bit of scrolling. If you didn’t already know that.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Unfortunately that’s not an effective shortcut from my phone

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wait until you find out that you can type the first letter and it will jump to that position in the list. Then - check this shit out - you can keep pressing that letter to jump through each item in the list. It takes me like 3 seconds.

Now, hold onto your hats, because you won't believe what you can do when picking your state...

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

If it involves moving to a device that has a keyboard, you’ve lost me

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Trump will sign an executive order stating United States must be the first country in all UI selection widgets.

[–] bobs_monkey@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

He probably thinks UI is a urinary infection and wants to ban them.

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Fortunately you'll move much further up the list alphabetically since you're rapidly becoming the Fascist States of America.

Huh, my grandad was right, there is an upside to every situation!

Sometimes websites will have a calendar for entering dates, where the largest unit of time you can flip back and forth is a month. Pure evil.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Usually you can click on the year and it switches to year mode to make things easier, or just type the date and it figured things out. If not, you can use a massage gun on the mouse. Or a fast click app.

Or a molotov cocktail on the server farm! A few of those babies and this is a thing of the past.

Oh hi fbi, what brings you by? Need some snacks for your stakeout van? Boy do I know the feeli... actually I should stop talking and grab those snacks

I was once filling a online form for my dad and made a joke about how much I have to scroll to get to his birth year and now I feel bad about it as I have to do the same for myself

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

legend says OP still scrolling

[–] Homescool@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The Big Wheel used to give me mild anxiety as I kept imagining different ways to die spinning. Like your hand gets stuck or whatever. Final Destination type stuff.

We all had that thought.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It gets further every year... cool username btw

It was nice before they started adding 2000-later. You could type the first number for the decade and it would bring you there. Now have to type "19" at the beginning like a neanderthal.

I have this on one of the digicams I own. I don't think the designers ever considered that it would still be used in the year of our lord 2025. It's probably from 2010 or something, and it has this horrendous touch UI for selecting the date. You have to press down like 15 times to get to 2025, but due to the laggy unresponsive UI and touchscreen, this is quite the journey. Obviously it forgets the date whenever I take the battery out to charge it.

I know the little thing isn't sentient, but I still like to imagine it getting more and more astounded as the years increment further and further in the date selector.
