..because she was a child soldier. She was doing this aged 14.

We tend not to glorify tales of the WW2 where war crimes were committed.

[–] ricecake@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 week ago

We do tend to do tales of tragedy though. She was the victim on two different counts, as well as being the hero (recruited as a child soldier, and defending against hostile invasion. Heroic for shooting Nazis).

Depicting someone defending against the bad guys while being taken advantage of by the good guys and meanwhile shooting pedophile Nazis feels like a shoe in.

Also, it wasn't technically a war crime at the time. The conventions around not using child soldiers are shockingly recent. Was still a bad thing to do, but only by modern standards.
We also tend to glorify war crime stories depressingly often, so I'm not sure that point even stands.

So Kick-Ass it, make it about her going and out killing these SS pedos who are following a 14 year old into the woods.

And we totally do, look at Inglourious Basterds.

Must everything be turned into a Hollywood moneymaker?

[–] Pnut@lemm.ee 8 points 1 week ago

I get what you're saying. And I get that movies only get made if they make money. However, things like this need to be brought to younger generations. People have forgotten too much generation to generation. The most insane of us have inherited it from their fathers. Hatred that bides its time until it can masquerade as order. Every generation needs to know why and what the generations previously fought hard for. So, let's just keep making movies. In a thousand years someone might find a way to access an archive and ignite (yet another) fight for simple freedom.

According to IMDb, it's in preproduction. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it lists the director and writers.

The Red Head https://www.imdb.com/title/tt29931730/

The story of three young girls in World War II, Hannie Schaft, Truus and Freddie Oversteegen, who are inducted into the Dutch resistance to assassinate Nazis and Nazi collaborators.

I feel like this would have been perfect for Inglorious Basterds, if that movie wasn't directed by Tarantino. Instead of The Bear Jew, we would have had this woman.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 6 points 1 week ago

Cause people with money tend to side with Hitler types.

[–] FuryMaker@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Damn, we need a few thousand clones of her, asap. Nazis everywhere lately. Although they started to come back right around the time she died. Makes you wonder.

Hollywood is one of the most unionized industries in the US.

There's a disconnect between the actors/writers and the producers. The producers just want money. They don't care otherwise, and aren't smart enough to realize how they're funding something that advocates against them. They do fuck with the script according to what they think focus groups will like. If someone brought them a Luigi script, the producers would tell them to stick in a lovable dog as a faithful companion to Luigi, and Brian Thompson's family would be shown eating DiGgiorno pizza for dinner because they got a product placement contract.

This is how stuff like DS9: Bar Association or Star Wars: Andor gets produced.

Please don't. I know Hollywood and it will become.somr over dramatized turd piece that has little to do with what actually happened
