"Repro" workers

You can always tell what kind of biases an article has based on the slang it uses.

"tech bro" is insulting to people that work in tech that aren't assholes

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 1 points 1 hour ago

Nah. Been working in tech for nearly 30 years, "tech bro" is a delineation. Keeps the fuckers from smearing the rest of us

[–] EncryptKeeper@lemmy.world 8 points 14 hours ago

Tech bro is practically a slur and doesn’t refer to “dudes that just work in tech”

because it lumps us in with a bunch of assholes that are doing bad things with tech

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 13 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I don't see it. "Tech bros" are a subset of people in tech. I don't feel lumped with them. It's like saying "reckless drives" is offensive because it lumps normal drivers with assholes.
If anything it's offensive to women. Elizabeth Holmes was a typical "tech bro". Not only men are assholes in tech. It's a discriminatory term.

A "bro" is a mindset in this sense, not a biological designation.

Women can be "bros".

My, my. Look at all the open source, privacy focused period trackers in the Fdroid store.

While this is obviously the solution, being smug and pointing at it as if it's obvious and women are stupid for not knowing about it doesn't help.

If anything we need to figure out how to help women discover drip or whatever alternative we want to recommend. We need to figure out how to get it higher up on the Play Store's search results rather than it being impossible to discover at something like #40 on that list. We need to figure out how to introduce F-droid and related solutions in a way that is as close to frictionless as possible.

Sadly, not everyone is willing to put in the amount of work we are and others aren't even aware of the issues.

I definitely agree with you about being kind in our introduction of free software to the masses.

I don't think he was being smug though because he's talking to an audience of tech-minded people.

Which is fair. I very likely misread it because us tech-minded people have a tendency to be smug or look down on our peers when they miss something we deem obvious (that's been my experience online at least).

I didn't mean any offence or anything by my comment though.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sorry if it seemed smug at all. The "My my" was more being happy that the Fdroid app repo is pulling it's weight and a valuable resource that fascists seem to over look.

Sorry if I misread. Didn't mean to attack or offend.

I do absolutely agree with you regardless.

You pay...no way around that. Google has rigged the search in the store, you will never get a good search location unless you pay.

[–] reseller_pledge609@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean, yeah. Just remembered someone mentioning that yesterday and wanted to add it, because it's ridiculous.

[–] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah it's absolutely insane...I searched for an app just yesterday by exact name, and it still didn't crack the top 20 reaults

That's how you know your system is fucked. Searching BY NAME doesn't result in the app appearing as result number 1.

There is absolutely zero excuse or reason for that.
