Deadfall holds that place for me. His role is absolutely insane.

[–] Clbull@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent was pretty damn good.

[–] Bakkoda@sh.itjust.works 12 points 14 hours ago

Raising Arizona by miles for me

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 5 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Next (2007) was quite good actually.

[–] meekah@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

I also remember it fondly but I'm not sure it would hold up nowadays.. Have you watched it recently?

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

Not that recently I'm afraid. But I remember that I was really curious how the story plays out and while it wasn't groundbreaking it was a satisfying twist end.

Not your regular Hollywood happy end.

[–] meekah@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

Yeah that's true for sure.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

It's a toss up between Con Air's bonkers accent and Drive Angry's William Fitchner.

[–] twice_hatch@midwest.social 6 points 16 hours ago

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adaptation_(film)

It was weird and sometimes I like a good weird

[–] JakenVeina@midwest.social 9 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Not one single mention for Gone in Sixty Seconds?

Lemmings... do I have bad taste?

[–] Darleys_Brew@lemmy.ml 2 points 17 hours ago

If you lived near me we could have a few beers and watch it. Sad that they destroyed so many Mustangs though.

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 5 points 16 hours ago

Wild at Heart

[–] General_Effort@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago

Honorable mention for 8mm. It isn't a good movie, unless you go for the very 1999 aesthetics. But I'll give a shout-out to that quote delivered by Joaquin Phoenix: "If you dance with the devil, the devil don't change. The devil changes you."

[–] markovs_gun@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

Face/Off. Golden desert eagles, Nic Cage at his cagiest, John Travolta and Nic Cage swapping bodies, legitimately great action scenes, and Nic Cage grabbing a woman's ass while wearing a priest costume. Just an incredible movie.

[–] ryathal@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 day ago

Kickass is the best surprise nic cage film.
Lord of war is the best serious cage.
Bangkok dangerous is the most cage being cage film.

[–] ElderReflections@fedia.io 3 points 17 hours ago

Bringing out the Dead, because I feel his tortured quest for sleep

[–] bizzle@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The Color Out of Space, I think he does really well in that and it's scary as fuck.

The Wicker Man, because of the scene with the bees is priceless.

And of course, Mandy. I will not elaborate further, just watch it.

Lord of War

Here's the intro to Lord of War. I love the little smirk he pulls off at about 45s.

[–] WildPalmTree@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

Shame about the real world parts. Ruins it for me these days.

[–] urda@lebowski.social 10 points 1 day ago

Lord of War is a work of art

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

by far the best movie he's ever been involved with. Good performance too. Leaving Las Vegas is another good performance.

Con Air, hooray for the sounds of fucking silence!

[–] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The Rock. I'll be taking no further questions.

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 4 points 23 hours ago

Carla was the prom queen

[–] TVA@thebrainbin.org 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Con Air ... why? No clue, I would have thought I'd go with Lord of War, but Con Air immediately popped into my head when I read the question, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How in the actual fuck has no one said Face/Off?

[–] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That was Travolta playing both roles

Pig, amazing film with a very subtle performance. The scene at the restaurant is absolutely brutal yet without any violence.

[–] GraniteM@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Pig is a masterclass in not telling the audience more than they absolutely need to know. I've gotten so sick of movies where the dialog repeats itself for the benefit of people who weren't paying attention thirty seconds ago, or else it constantly spells out stuff that rightly ought to be conveyed by the actions of the characters. Pig is the antithesis of that. Characters hardly say anything that they don't need to say, and everything else is left to the viewer to figure out. I fucking love it.

[–] steeznson@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

I loved the bait and switch where all the marketing suggested it would be a John Wick rip off but the movie turned out to be a lot more original

[–] EbenezerScrew@lemmy.world 37 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The Rock and Con Air are tied for me. Con Air's cast is star studded and Nic Cage with a southern accent is fantastic.

"Put the Bunny back in the box."

I laughed my arse off at 'The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent'. A classic farce like you don't get much these days.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

This is actually the only Nic Cage movie I like because I can't stand him, but my love for Pedro outweighs my dislike for Nic Cage.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

It's weird how polarising he is. I wouldn't say I'm a 'fan' as such, but I do think he's one of the most remarkable and fun to watch actors ever. Every role he puts in 1000%.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

Oh I agree 100%. I know I said I can't stand him and that's true, I generally don't like to watch his movies, but full respect to whatever the fuck it is he is doing.

The other one I like with him is Willy's Wonderland, but he doesn't say a single word in it so that might help with the tolerance. (The movie is just well done in general too)

[–] TheUnicornOfPerfidy@feddit.uk 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Matchstick Men anyone, or just me?

[–] Glitch@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 day ago

Adaptation.

It's got twice as many Nick's, and the Tiger King getting Maryl Streep addicted to drugs

[–] zakobjoa@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (8 children)

"The color from outer space"

His slow descent into madness is great. It's like him turning the Cage knob very slowly from 0 to 11.

Also imo the best Lovecraft adaption.

Edit: "Color out of Space" is the correct title. Thanks to the commenter below.

Raising Arizona, why? Just watch it!

[–] ShyCake@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Wallys wonderland Her did speak a single word but cage beat the living crap out of some robots.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Imagine, my first introduction to this movie was that I passed out on the couch one night and woke up at 3 am to a scene of him slaughtering one of those fucking animatronic nightmares.

[–] evanstucker@lemmy.ml 24 points 1 day ago

Raising Arizona

[–] kubok@fedia.io 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Another vote for Raising Arizona, although it is a close tie with Wild at Heart.

Plenty of The Rock and Con Air mentions, so I’m going to toss one out for Gone in 60 Seconds.

Yes the writing is terrible and it has its fair share of cringe moments, but damnit I still like it. Perhaps it was the cast, or the weird 90’s/00’s aesthetic, or maybe because I was still in my formative teen years, pre 9/11, aka the before times, but it holds a special place in my heart.
