No, social media is not just for pictures.

But if someone is using it just for pictures and you try to sell them on a service that isn't fitting to their use case, that's on you if they're not interested.

Know your audience. Offer them alternatives that actually fit their preferences, not yours.

Maybe checkout Pixelfed, which is (from what I gather) similar to what instagram was 10 years ago

This made me check on how pixelfed has been faring, since I remember them going through a huge boom recently - and to my joy, they still have a very large (for fediverse standards) community, they even rebounded a bit from the initial drop of people leaving after trying it out!

Oooh they were talking about Image filters...

My brain defaulted to keyword filters etc

[–] Dreaming_Novaling@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago

Well, I did think about keyword filters due to the post saying Lemmy, but if the post said Pixelfed I was immediately think of image filters. Depends on the service.

There's a keyword filter and an NSFW filter

[–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Can filter out selected communities and users too

Wait how do I use the cat filter

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago

Several major instances have a cat@ community.

Insert a hose into a cat mouth, turn on water and wait until the water will leak from the other side of the cat filter.

Not sure the problem is your sister, as much as it is your conflating the fediverse with Lemmy. As others have mentioned, the appropriate response here seems to be a link to Pixelfed rather than frustration at someone using social media differently than you. You wouldn’t try to force an IG user to join Reddit if that’s not their thing.

You can block communities and instances. This place would be intolerable without that filter.

She's talking about image filters, like on Snapchat.

I didn't expect to see my boi Thurston today. RIP you crazy son of cat.

~~Thunder client has good filtering.~~

edit: pixelfed

I think she meant image filters, like the ones that change colors.

[–] juliebean@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

thank you. until i got to your comment, i had no idea what was meant by 'filters'

[–] Ioughttamow@fedia.io 3 points 1 week ago

Ich iel when I see beans in jeans

[–] rickdg@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

It has a nice filter where it excludes people that roll their eyes when they hear words like "federation".
