Looking at a 4070ti or a 4080 to upgrade my dual 1080s from my other post but now I'm not sure which 3rd party model to choose (ASUS TUF, MSI, ZOTAC, Gigabyte...). I'm looking for longevity and not specifically max power if that means a shorter life. Using it mostly for general gaming. Mostly FPS and such.

What's the difference?

Is it just added cooling for boosted performance?

Why does the price change ~$400?

Chances are im either too dumb or don't use any programs that would require overclocking/boosting.

I'm willing to shell out the $ if it's worth it but I have no idea. I may wait until the 50s come out to pull the trigger but that's an issue for later.

My current build with 32gb RAM instead of 16: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/3h4CmG

Usually it's in the cooling. Some will have 2 fans, some with 3. Others will actually have an entire closed loop liquid cooler. Sometimes the vram will also change but that doesn't happen a lot these days. A lot of the time it's just marketing wank though. It's a good idea to look at video reviews of the specific models you want to buy though, as there are sometimes issues with specific cards from specific 3rd parties that you wouldn't know about otherwise.

Just be sure to stay away from Linus Tech Tips cuz their testing is really inconsistent, and sometimes gets really close to willful misinformation.

Ohhhh good point. Their "reviews" are actually just mislabeled commercials.

Everything is generally pointing toward the ASUS TUF OC edition. Any thoughts on that?

i have a TUF 3070 8GB, the VRAM is definetely not enough, but if you can find a model with more, go for it.

If the price os right and research looks good I'd say take it. ASUS has a really good name, and things that I've bought from their TUF line in the past have been good.

I wouldnt say to "Stay away" but definitely dont make them your only source.

If LTT, GN, J2C and HWunboxed all agree on something being good or bad thats a pretty decent sample size.

This. Sound was an important factor for me, and so I picked the general family(s) and narrowed down from there, but whether the processor is tuned to 3.4GHz or 3.5GHz isn't something that's going to affect performance in any human-noticable way for 99% of games.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I'm not cool enough to understand the difference and I definitely won't be maxing it out. Thanks

If you are only looking at Nvidia Cards you are missing out on a lot. When it comes to pure gaming performance without Ray Tracing, AMD has currently the lead.

And if a 4080 is your budget, you might aswell get yourself an 7900xtx (cheaper but stronger). Got the Saphire Nitro+ one in June this year myself. So far very happy with it.

I'll shill the pny verto series. About the best in cooling performance/silence and cheaper than other comparable models.

It might be worth doing a bit of a search and see what second hand 3090 and 3090ti are going for if you're looking at 4080 money.

You might snag a bargain.

I ended up with the Nvidia branded 4080 and I like it a lot. Makes way less heat than my last Founders edition

Perhaps wait and see what the rumored upcoming 40x0 Super cards will be like.
