I don’t love the idea of people advertising their apps here (except maybe on like a “self promotion Saturday” sort of thing), but I do like the idea of the app. I was developing a very similar idea as a nextjs PWA, but ended up abandoning it and just using HTLB as my game tracker instead. That said, I’ll check this one out! $8 feels a little steep for the IAP though

[-] hmandlm@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Yeah I saw other people just throwing out their apps, so I figured I'd put mine in the mix.

I appreciate the feedback on the IAP, but the price is pretty fair in comparison with the competition, especially since it's a one-time purchase. In any case, let me know what you think!

[-] kaitco@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I’ve downloaded the app and I’m going to start entering stuff to really play around with it in a bit, but I’ll be honest: the IAP feels a bit steep to me.

I’ll note, I’m pretty cheap and I’m not likely to spend on an app unless I feel I’m getting a wealth of usage. For example, I threw, I think, around $10 at the old Apollo app for Reddit because it was my most-used app by some 10 hours each week (RIP). I had a daily task app that I paid $5 for and another app with like translations and concordances as the IAP for $10. I also removed ads for $1 in a manga-reader for iPad. I give these examples because, for me at least, apps that are getting daily use “deserve” to get my money.

While this one sounds neat and is honestly something I’ve been searching for, $8 USD hits me a little hard. I doubt I’m going to be in this app daily and it’s got a sole, albeit useful, function. The same could be achieved in Excel or Sheets, sans notifications about the newer games.

So, just my opinion, but something like this needs to be priced within “splurge” range for apps. Like honestly, $1.99-2.99. It’s low enough to hit that “sure why not” and not so high that you make a user question why they would spend.

$8 feels about right for a one time purchase. But it’s be nice if there was a trial to kind of see the features without having to commit to purchasing the app. Still I will probably end up getting it because the app does fill a useful niche that the various game collection apps don’t in that it can act as a central repository for notes and quick reviews and such. Still hoping for an easier way to add games to library.

[-] hmandlm@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

That's totally fair, thank you for sharing your perspective. I understand that not everyone is willing to splurge on an app with an $8 price tag. At this point the app hasn't been around long enough for me to look assess whether or not the price point is right or not.

[-] irishbreakfast@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Most game tracking apps have recurring subscriptions so a one time purchase is beyond fair! I’d say if folks like your app they should get themselves grandfathered in on that should you ever switch to a subscription haha

[-] hmandlm@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, the price wasn't just pulled out of thin air – I looked at what was out there and set the price based on the competition. I also saw that there was a good amount of people who disliked paying subscriptions for similar apps, which is why I've avoided it.

Hi @hmandlm@lemmy.world, can you please tag this as self promo since this is your own app (prepend the title with [Self Promo]). Moving forward, we're going to tighten up the rules regarding self promo apps (see post here).

[-] hmandlm@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Done - thank you for the heads up.

Thanks for voicing your opinion. I've brought it up to the mod team and we agree, and I think it's considered an ad. We've clarified the rules regarding this and will start a monthly self promo thread starting August. I've created a post here for this rule clarification.

Would be cool to incorporate free games from stores like steam, epic games, and gog!

[-] hmandlm@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

If there's a way to do this, then I'd consider it! For now, whenever links to external sites like Epic, Steam are available, they're available via a game's disclosure menu to visit and share.

[-] Spazztastik@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Not sure how this discord bot is doing it but it is!

The killer feature in something like this is some way to import my games. I have over 1400 games between steam, epic etc. I do not want to enter all that info

[-] hmandlm@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Something like this is planned, but I can't commit to anything just yet. Dealing with third-party services can be a bit of a rollercoaster, so I'm waiting to see if there's enough of a demand for specific services like Steam before doing anything.

[-] naeemthm@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

A good app that DOESN’T have an annual subscription fee?! Wow, thank you so much for making this a one time purchase for Pro.

[-] skates@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Is there an import/export backup feature of the data? One of the biggest hold backs for me when installing an app that'll take me some time to set up is the fear I might have to restart if it gets abandoned.

Also, $8 one time payment is totally fine in my opinion. It's a one time payment and probably a useful app.

[-] hmandlm@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Import/export is planned, but for now your data is synced up via iCloud (which I'm aware isn't technically a backup).

Out of curiosity, what kind of backup format(s) would you consider to be useful? CSV? JSON? Something else?

And thank you for your input regarding the price. All of the comments regarding pricing so far have been fair – everyone has their own limits as to what they're willing to spend on an app, and I appreciate the honest feedback.

[-] code@lemmy.mayes.io 2 points 1 year ago

Jeon and csv for me. Just so i can get my data out if needbe

[-] hmandlm@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

See my above comment. I'm thinking JSON for sure, but we'll see about others.

[-] skates@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I like the exports that Day One does if you've ever used that journaling app before (they do multiple kinds of exports). JSON, for if I need to write a script to import the data somewhere else. TXT for something nice and human readable. CSV for whoever wants to use this format lol. They also got a pdf printout just to make things look pretty. As for imports, I think they have import options for their competitor's export options, but I've only used this once and I don't remember the option I used.

But if it came down to just one, I'd say JSON is the most important for me. The other ones are just nice to have but not critical.

And np, I didn't want you thinking everyone thought it was too expensive.

Haha, thanks. I'm enjoying (and appreciating) the different perspectives being shared so far.

JSON would be the logical approach here, that way you've got an easy-to-follow structure of everything. (It also would be the easiest to implement.) I'll consider such a feature for the near-future.

[-] stelz0r@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Would actually recommend the one from IGN, called „Playlist“.

[-] TORFdot0@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

This app looks really cool, it’d be really awesome if you could connect it to steam/Xbox/psn/retroachievements to track play time and achievement/trophy progress and automatically import to library. I have a collection of over 250 console games plus a few dozen PC games and it’s a little daunting to manually add them to library
