Palmares, or Quilombo dos Palmares, was a settlement of fugitive slaves established gradually from the early 1600s to 1694, about 60k inland from the northeast coast of Brazil around the regions of Pernambuco and Alagoas. Estimates indicated that 10,000 to 20,000 fugitive slaves, native Brazilians, and various outcast groups (such as Jews and Muslims) inhabited Palmares throughout the period.

Portuguese colonization, particularly from 1570, brought sugar cane plantations to the northeast coast of Brazil, utilizing, as labor, enslaved Africans and native peoples. Some of the slaves and native Americans resisted and established small settlements or quilombos in the area of Pernambuco, where palm trees abounded (thus the name Palmares).

Illustrative of its complexity, Quilombo dos Palmares in 1640 was described as comprising several separate settlements which pledged their loyalty to one leader (chief). Two of the settlements were mostly of Indigenous origin (Subupira e Tabocas); one of the Portuguese colonists who joined the quilombo (Amaro), and seven Bantos, that is, settlements of fugitive slaves (Andalaquituche, Macaco, Aqualtene, Ambrabanga, Tabocas, Zumbi, Arotiene). With its capital in Macaco, Palmares possessed a complex social structure, replicating, in many instances, African political systems.

When the Portuguese lost control of the region to the Dutch in the 1630s, the new colonial rulers continued the military campaign of the earlier Portuguese to bring Palmares under control. They were no more successful than their predecessors, and the quilombo continued to grow. In 1654, when Portugal regained control of the area, it resumed its attempts to conquer Palmares.

Portuguese military forces and mill owners in the region attempted to regain control over the quilombo for the next forty years. Ganga-Zumba, the Palmares chief during the latter part of this period, tried to negotiate an agreement with the Portuguese where the quilombo would no longer accept fugitive slaves or fight the Portuguese in exchange for permanent recognition of their land and freedom for those born in Palmares. However, Zumbi, the settlement’s military leader, chose resistance to the Portuguese. The Portuguese never accepted Ganga-Zumbi’s proposal and continued to attack the quilombo. Finally, in 1694, Palmares was conquered and destroyed by a military force under the command of Domingos Jorge Velho. Zumbi was killed one year later in 1695.

Palmares was a multifaceted quasi-state that lasted for most of the 17th Century, resisting attack by two European powers. Known for challenging Dutch and Portuguese sovereignty in Brazil, Palmares was a symbol of resistance to colonialism and the possibility of multicultural coexistence.

However, the destruction of Palmares failed to stem the emergence of hundreds, perhaps thousands of smaller quilombos throughout Brazil. Nor did it prevent countless other acts of resistance that undermined planter domination even after the abolition of slavery in 1888. Cheney describes how the legend of the Quilombo dos Palmares inspired a 1988 constitutional amendment that extended land rights to the descendants of fugitive slaves. Thousands of “modern quilombos” have petitioned for government recognition while organizing mass movement in the countryside that has won concessions from local landowners and pressured elected officials to implement affirmative action policies in other areas. In 2015, the specter of Palmares looms large over Brazil.

Illiteracy is so bad online that I got into an argument with someone that doesn't realise that the conjunction "however" can mean "in spite of that" or "on the other hand", and thus can alter the context of the previous sentence or paragraph. I give up honestly.

Snap peas in ramen attempt #3 was a full success. This time I cut them into short pieces and let them simmer for an extra minute before adding the noodles. They came out tender and a perfect mix between their own flavor and the broth. On to the next grand adventure.

I only report people on here for two reasons: breaking our relatively lax rules, and being annoying.

I've never bought into music being this healing force or something that we inherently should respect. I believe that music can be those things, but just because you do music doesn't mean YOU are those things, carry the tradition of those things or embody those things.

I still think it is a positive thing for society and is a great diagnostic tool for understanding what's wrong with your society.

One thing I can't let go of is music being a holding pen for some of the worst people on the planet.

One jazz musician I know, really good and played with famous people, got so jaded with music and became a cop. Another one didnt feel he was getting enough respect and probably got tired of being poor, but hes an absolute narcissist. He works in the trades now and is probably an awful fucking monster to work with. What if they never found music in the first place? What if they were tech bros or finbros? They clearly can take something the distance but they're objectively bad people. Thank god they got fixated on music and inadvertently shielded us from something horrible.

I'm almost done shedding single stroke roll with French grip (no fingers). I should never have to practice single stroke roll again with the amount of time, effort and thought I have put into it.

Also today mokey is making chana masala for the first time :o)

The fact that this man didn't have a route despite being a kind a friendly bro to our protagonist is the worst thing that 4chan has ever done.

It's so weird seeing most of the doomers from the Anglo internet live in rich developed countries that are going to suffer the least. Not to say people in the global south are completely optimistic, but we're trying to work with the best we've got and not talking about how humanity is going extinct in ten years or whatever the doomers think is going to happen.

To be fair, I'm living in an area that's been hit hard but still probably going to last by the end of the century. Other parts of the country aren't as lucky and they're probably more concerned about where they'll be migrating to.

Thinking napoleon movie will start around 3 struggle sessions, what's your take mega denizens

[–] theposterformerlyknownasgood@hexbear.net 10 points 2 years ago (3 children)

What's there to struggle about? He's pretty universally acknowledged as "pretty bad" on a moral level by everyone on the left, apart from British people he's also usually acknowledged as "pretty brilliant" on matters of war and statecraft, and in terms of personal connections he's "pretty cucked".

What are the good movie adaptations of various Shakespeare plays? I've got an itch to get into his work, but every time I've tried before, I've gotten frustrated because in the past I've tried just reading his work, and given up after a few weeks. People keep telling me I ought to see live plays instead of reading them but there's no way I can afford to do that. So I figured maybe good movie adaptations might be the affordable way to try.

Theres just so much shit that investigators and prosecutors didn't touch about SBF and FTX that is bugging the ceap out of me. Like the weird back and forth done with VC money, where he would receive millions of VC dollars he would then invest in the same VCs that just gave it to him. Like out of 225 million dollars invested into FTX by Sequoia, 200 million was invested into Seqoua by SBF through his companies.

Christmas has begun at my work. Time to be basically at war until new year. How are people eating out at our expensive restaurant and doing Christmas shopping? We've been packed to the gills every night.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago

Been taking home sales printouts at the end of each night and figuring out how much we're being fucked cause that's good to know when it comes time to get everyone raises again (I ask annually and always for the whole staff, not just me). Last 3 days food sales alone were $18k, this is gross not net, but it doesn't include drinks which you can safely say make up the difference and then a bit more on average. There is a general we need more fucking money buzz I haven't seen yet and that rules cause I'm not the only one sticking my neck out!

Trick your workplace into informal unionization if they won't realistically unionize folks! I sold being essentially a union rep and having meeting without management around as positives to the boss. Get a real union if you can, but if it isn't in the cards, organize without them even knowing they're doing it.
