Back in the day, on other forums than this one, there were tags to differentiate between porn (nsfw) and gore (nsfl). This was nice for people browsing new that had no problem seeing tits, but wanted to avoid degloved hands.

Throughout the years, the NSFL tag went out of use. What happened?

I really want a NSFL tag. I very much do not want to see gore. There are other buckets of things that I’d like to be tagged for ease of filtering. Yiff and Furry art. I fully support those that do want to enjoy that content, I’d just like to be able to filter easier.

Some of it is the Disneyfication that goes with the enshittification at the Old Place. In pursuit of the Holy IPO, they banned a lot of that stuff. Some for good reason (child porn, toxic disinformation...), and some for not so good reasons (banning or NSFW-ing weed subs.)

Also happened at Tumblr (which killed it) and Youtube, which makes it incredibly hard on content creators as they get strikes on their account at the drop of a hat for petty bullshit. When a business goes big, and the suit-and-tie caste hear the siren song of stock options, all of the sudden they'll start Big-Brothering everyone on the platform so some Wall Street boomer doesn't publicly lose his shit and cause the share prices to tank.

Reddit brought down the banhammer hard on a lot of 'controversial' communities around 4 or so years ago.

[-] IronKrill@lemmy.ca 35 points 1 year ago

I seriously think Lemmy should add NSFL. There's not really any downside. Although I'll go slightly against the grain here and say I want to filter out NSFW and keep NSFL if I can. If I'm browsing my content feed I don't want horny posts. I have a separate account for horny posts where I don't want to see gore. This would benefit both use cases.

[-] WhiteHawk@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Just have an on/off toggle for both, separately

Please make it configurable content warnings. I also want to filter fake news, things that aren't porn but maybe not suited for minors either, and stuff that triggers people's phobias or bad memories. And probably a few other categories.

And user-configurable policies like the Message Rewrite Facility from Pleroma.

[-] evilgiraffe666@ttrpg.network 8 points 1 year ago

NSFG - not safe for grandparents. I think fake news fits in there just as well as mild nudity and triggers.

[-] rufus@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yeah, thank you. That sounds like it. Nobody seems to understand me. I just want one platform that simultaneously fits me and that i can show to my grandparends and/or give my mom and my 12 y o niece an account.

I've been hosting a Peertube instance during Covid. And many idiots came there after being banned by YouTube. So many that my timeline was half tech related stuff and half re-posts of some 'documentaries' about adrenochrome or nanobots inside the masks and vaccines.

I dislike that and it renders everyone insane, if you're exposed to that stuff every single day. And the second thing is: I pay for the server. It's my instance. And therefore I decide if I like to invite the Trump/Maga people to my online home. Or random covid deniers.

But I also diskile blocking everything. Sometimes I'd like to see what's going on with people like that. I like to watch NSFW stuff with my alt account. And i'm pro free speech. Even if it's idiots.

So that is why i would like to have something like content warnings and rules i can define myself. In addition to the crude ban everything.

Everything you just listed is the heart and soul of the internet today. Maybe you should just unplug and go to a library.

[-] ShittyKopper@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 year ago

Or maybe we should give people choices on what they want to see? This doesn't have to be an all or nothing thing.

[-] Ringmasterincestuous@aussie.zone 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I’m going the other way.. when they build a filter that hides everything I don’t already agree with or that supports my side of arguments, I’m mainlining it straight to my nervous system

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Coffee filter: check. Cannabis filter: check. Bacon sandwich filter: check. Cat filter: check. Butts butts butts butts butts butts butts filter: check. Ok I think we're good to go

[-] Zeth0s@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

People label Michelangelo's David as NSFW... That's super crazy

[-] trash@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Mainchan has separate tags for nsfw, nsfl, and political . It's nice, but I'm not sure how well a "political" tag would actually work on a place as popular as lemmy. Someone will always say that everything's political.

[-] BNE@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 year ago

Which, to be fair to them - everything is, you know? Nothing is really absent of politics because nothing is really absent of us.

[-] can@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I do actually agree with the sentiment. That's why I don't think it could really work in practice.

[-] ImplyingImplications@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 year ago

Anything that could actually use the NSFL tag is probably illegal to have on a website. There's a reason why best gore and live leak don't exist anymore. Hosting that kind of content is going to cause a lot of legal issues. I'm guessing no sites want to encourage that kind of content by offering a specific tag for it

[-] applejacks@lemmy.world 33 points 1 year ago

lol it is not illegal.

what law is it breaking?

[-] ImplyingImplications@lemmy.ca -4 points 1 year ago

There are more countries than the US. Canada has obscenity laws for example. I'm sure other countries also have laws about ISIS beheadings and mass shootings being shared online.

[-] vzq@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 year ago

Oh, you’re sure? That makes it ok then.

[-] Perfide@reddthat.com 26 points 1 year ago

This is just bullshit. Not everything NSFL is illegal. Before I quit reddit, the only reason my r/all wasn't having medical gore constantly pop up was because I individually blocked all of those subreddits as they appeared. If the NSFL tag was a site-wide tag option like NSFW is, I wouldn't have had to do all that effort.

[-] nieceandtows@programming.dev 21 points 1 year ago

Liveleak doesn't exist? Wow that's news to me.

[-] can@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago

I know that's not what you meant but liveleak actually did shutdown a couple years ago.

[-] nieceandtows@programming.dev 2 points 1 year ago

Thank you. I truly didn’t know. Stopped watching snuff after my daughter was born.

[-] minorninth@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

I think there's a huge range of stuff that's legal but that many people might want to filter out because it's gross or disgusting.

The tag "NSFL" may have been created for the most egregious pictures (that might be illegal in some cases), but it was generally applied to a much wider range of stuff in practice.

[-] Kolrami@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago

Medical injuries definitely seem like a good candidate and I don't know where pictures of medical injuries would be illegal.

[-] Eavolution@kbin.social 12 points 1 year ago

I don't agree, someone who got a nasty cut from a chainsaw while cutting a tree and posting it is definitely gore, should be classed as NSFL, and is very much legal.

[-] YoungPrinceAmmon@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Be the change your want to see - strat using it

[-] Eavolution@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago

Would that be a gory classic Fender guitar?

[-] kazerniel@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I still see it, albeit rarely, on some subreddits, eg. NatureIsMetal

[-] LaFinlandia@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 year ago

I use it frequently in the Ukraine community on the Sopuli.xyz instance.

[-] Dazza@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Does anyone here have the capability to implement this? Is it a Lemmy admin thing or can the app devs do something?

[-] Sibbo@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago

Likely the people here are not interested in this kind of content, so it does not exist. Or then maybe there are some instances with interested users, but then my instance has defederated from that, and probably yours too.
