What is happening in Ecuador?

Apparently there is a "war" between the government and the very powerful drug cartels that exist there. Really, a search for "ecuador news" gives a lot of relevant results.
He's hoping to hear some uniased facts about the situation filtered through a materialist lens without having to wade through lies and spin. It's reasonable to ask for info here.
