The cheap one I had broke, so I'm looking to get a better one without paying for things I didn't need. Photography equipment gets expensive......

I'm open to any recommendations and this thread might help other people too.

Some things specific to:

  • being able to take photos on uneven surfaces
  • can accommodate thicker phones and cases
  • not spring loaded, because it's hard to adjust and to insert the phone

I use this Square Jellyfish tripod mount which screws onto any standard tripod.

It is spring loaded but unless you buy a phone specific mount I doubt you'll find one that isn't. It's not too stiff so it's easy to insert your phone.

It opens quite wide - handles my Note 20 Ultra 5G plus Poetic Revolution rugged case with no issues.

It would help if you said how large a gadget you're willing to deal with. I have one that I like that is tiny and of decent quality, but spring loaded, so it doesn't meet your requirements. (It might not accomodate thick phone cases either). One the other hand there are larger ones that can accomodate tablets, but that aren't so easy to carry around.

Are you ok with the kind where a metal socket is stuck to the back of the phone with adhesive? https://niteize.com/mobile/steelie

I don't see a tripod adapter for that but it seems doable starting with the pedestal mount: https://niteize.com/steelie-pedestal-mount

I don't have that but saw it in the store and it looks nice.

I think that the one I have is this. I got it at a local camera store a while back:

I'm open to trying out things outside my requirements, so I'll look into some of these. Thank you!

I didn't know the metal socket types ones existed

The one you have looks decent, I'll keep that on my list of potential options.
