AI summary:

A Chilean journalist, Gonzalo Lira, who had been living in Ukraine, was arrested by the Security Service of Ukraine on suspicion of pro-Russian sympathies and criticizing the government. He had been detained before in April, released, and then rearrested for voicing views critical of the West and Ukraine's government. He faced torture while imprisoned, then managed to post bail but decided to flee to Hungary for political asylum. He believed the Ukrainian government was setting him up to be arrested again. He went missing after attempting to cross the Ukrainian-Hungarian border. The situation highlighted concerns about free speech and the treatment of dissenters in Ukraine.

No sources listed, selling a bunch of crap in the links below the video, first screen I see has the RT watermark.
What's with tinfoil hats and !worldnews@lemmy.ml

[–] bloopernova@programming.dev 20 points 1 year ago (2 children)

He was reporting on Ukrainian military positions to the russians.

Funny how that gets left out.

[–] Commiejones@hexbear.net 14 points 1 year ago

If he did that why did they let him back out on bail?

[–] Veritas@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If that's true why aren't the mainstream propaganda outlets all over this story to make the Russians look bad?

[–] taanegl@lemmy.ml 15 points 1 year ago (2 children)

So how does Putin's boot taste like?

[–] Veritas@lemmy.ml 21 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (4 children)

The bootlickers are the ones who believe everything that the elite tells them through the mainstream propaganda outlets.

At least I'm looking at alternative sources.

Oh wow a TikTok and YouTube video. Irrefutable proof that everything you say must be true and factual. 🙄

Can you explain why your title reads "U.S. journalist" yet the very first line of the article states "Chilean journalist?" Why does your link contain material directly from Russian state media? You claim that US media are pushing lies, but how does that have any bearing on whether your link is true? Sounds like someone needs to redo their Propaganda101 course. Good luck, comrade!

[–] Veritas@lemmy.ml -1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

The TikTok video appears to be more well-researched than most of the current reporting.

The summary is AI generated. You need to hear both Russian and US propaganda if you want to be able to know the truth about the war. The link doesn't have to be true, you have to do your own due diligence by gathering as much information as possible and sifting through it if you want to reach the truth. This is just a piece of the puzzle. I don't know why someone so critical of Russia would say comrade.

Edit: a dual citizen of the United States and Chile, who has been living in Kharkiv

So you admit that your post is Russian propaganda and that it doesn't matter if it's true or not because you have to read a bunch of propaganda to find the truth? That makes zero sense. Hearing propaganda repeated from different sources doesn't lead you to the truth whatsoever.

[–] Veritas@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

It's as much propaganda as any news from the US mainstream propaganda outlets like BBC, CNN, CBS. They aren't trying to inform you, they are misleading you into believing whatever they want you to believe. So to find the truth you need to see things from different perspectives and figure it out for yourself.

[–] CmdrShepard@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

What do the BBC, CNN, and CBS have to do with the authenticity of your post here on Lemmy?

Funny how you say your post is equivalent to CNN or CBS and then immediately say the intention of those companies is to deceive people, which implies that this is your intention as well. You're saying the quiet part out loud.

[–] Veritas@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I'm not saying it about the post though, that's your interpretation. I'm saying RT is as much a propaganda outlet as BBC, CNN, CBS, etc. So do not believe them outright, do your own due diligence.

[–] CmdrShepard@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

But the RT content is your post and you've been defending it with little more than whataboutism about 'western media being propaganda.' What due diligence have you done here? Seems like you only believe it to be true because you want to believe it's true otherwise you would be using facts and reasoning to make an argument rather than linking to TikTok videos about how corrupt CNN is.

Your mind is so open your brain fell out, and now you're posting bootlicking propaganda for an authoritarian waging a genocidal war.

You're a fucking joke bud.

Putin is literally an elite.

[–] Veritas@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I'm not telling you to believe what he says. RT shouldn't be trusted and neither should BBC, CNN, and other US propaganda outlets. The only way to learn the truth is looking at both perspectives and using critical thinking.

[–] freagle@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 1 year ago

LOL unironically baying for Russian blood and demanding more tanks to be sent to the proxy war meat grinder and watching war footage and cheering as long as the narrative is Russians getting shot and then lacking self awareness to the degree that you call someone else a bootlicker? Will wonders never cease.

Jimmy Dore, a man who has publically admitted he will say anything for the highest bidder. I'll never believe a word he says about anything.

Fucking Veritas lmao

[–] Coskii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 year ago

Ah yes, the Chilean united states of America journalist.

Is this story legit? No idea. Can I believe it? Absolutely. And I can do so without giving a damn. A country at war for no fault of their own is going to have a strong amount of nationalism and dissenters living within it could very much get disappeared. Whether it's from Ukrainian propaganda, or just the will of the people, dissenters tend to vanish.

Discussion of conspiracy theories
In May 2017, Dore discussed conspiracy theories on the murder of Seth Rich on his show.[40][41] According to Salon, Dore continued to insist that there were "a lot of red flags" and there was "probably something more to this story" after the source of much of the conspiracy theory was discredited.[42] In December 2020, an article in New York magazine said Dore's discernment was questionable, due in part to his "promotion of conspiracy theories implicating the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in Seth Rich's death".[43]

In 2017, Dore argued that the chemical weapons attack on the opposition-held town of Khan Sheikhun was likely to have been a "false flag", orchestrated by groups opposed to Bashar al-Assad.[44] The investigative journalism site Bellingcat reported that Dore received $2,500 from the Association for Investment in Popular Action Committees in 2017. The Association is responsible for the Serena Shim Award and is described by Bellingcat as a pro-Assad lobby group.[44] According to Bellingcat, Dore featured Eva Bartlett in "another 2017 conspiracy-theory segment" about Syria.[44]

In 2018, according to Stephen Shalom writing in New Politics, Dore cited an op-ed which quoted US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis out of context as saying that he did not have evidence that the nerve agent sarin was used in Syria.[45] Mattis, speaking in a press conference in February 2018, had been referring to recent reports when he said he did not have evidence of sarin use, adding that Assad's government had "been caught using" sarin during the Obama administration and "used it again during our administration".[45]
