First up, here are some things you can expect:

  • a new type of token (at least done as a cohesive theme)
  • a card that can activate to copy enchantments
  • Adventures on a new permanent type
  • an artifact that has two different artifact subtypes normally associated with artifact tokens
  • a creature type from Alpha gets a draft archetype
  • fairy tale Sagas
  • multiple legendary Foods
  • a new card with a lobotomy effect
  • a creature with two triggers, one for artifacts entering the battlefield and one for enchantments
  • a new mechanic that batches together three items that have been in the game since Alpha but never batched before

Next, here are some rules text that will be showing up on cards:

  • “If a permanent entering the battlefield causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger, that ability triggers an additional time.”
  • “Look at the top twenty cards of your library.”
  • “it produces three times as much of that mana instead.”
  • “Sacrifice all Reflections you control.”
  • “Creatures you control with +1/+1 counters on them have all activated abilities of all creature cards exiled with CARDNAME.”
  • “have base power and toughness 4/4 and flying.”
  • “exile up to one other non-Fox creature”
  • “Land creatures you control”
  • “Whenever you tap an untapped creature an opponent controls,”
  • “X is 2 plus the number of cards in your graveyard that are instant cards, sorcery cards, and/or have an Adventure.”

Here are some creature type lines from the set:

  • Creature – Mouse
  • Creature – Rabbit Unicorn
  • Creature – Faerie Shapeshifter
  • Creature – Elf Fox Knight
  • Creature – Giant Archer
  • Creature – Plant Wurm
  • Creature – Elemental Raccoon
  • Legendary Creature – Rat Noble
  • Legendary Creature – Vedalken Scout
  • Legendary Creature – Human Warlock Bard

Finally, here are some names in the set:

  • Candy Grapple
  • Charming Scoundrel
  • Food Fight
  • Protective Parents
  • Scream Puff
  • Stroke of Midnight
  • A Tale for the Ages
  • Three Blind Mice
  • Three Bowls of Porridge
  • Up the Beanstalk

a new type of token (at least done as a cohesive theme)

So it's not a strictly new token, just a new theme — so it could be Nightmare, for example.

an artifact that has two different artifact subtypes normally associated with artifact tokens

Most likely Food Treasure, given the Food theme.

Adventures on a new permanent type

Probably enchantments, but it would be interesting if it was lands, with a rule modification letting you cast the adventure sorcery and then play the land from exile.

a new card with a lobotomy effect

Had to look this up. [[Lobotomy]] (from Tempest) removes a named card from opponent's hand, library, and graveyard.

Creature – Rabbit Unicorn

Unibunny!

Food Fight

My guess: a red enchantment with "Sacrifice a Food: Food Fight deals 1 damage to any target."

Legendary Creature – Vedalken Scout

That's a surprise for Eldraine. Presumably this is someone from another plane (Kaladesh?) who got stuck in Eldraine via Omenpaths?

There are three legendary Vedalken already: Nin, Padeem, and Unctus; plus Dovin Baan who could have been desparked. None of them are exactly Scout material. So this is a new character.

[[card name]] to call

Oh man I would LOVE a desparked Dovin! He was such a an interesting character, he had that idiot savant trope except he wasn't an idiot and was actually personable instead of just being "lmao LOGIC" all the time.

@fubo also food clue and treasure clue are likely next year.

[–] fubo@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'd expect the murder-mystery set has Clues and maybe Clue Treasures. Food Clues, though? Maybe those too.

[–] rubythulhu@mtgzone.com 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Blood Clue could fit a murder mystery theme, too.

[–] fubo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Blood and Clue are kinda redundant, though, unless there's a strong graveyard theme or Madness or something like that.

Oh, I just realized — with Food in this set and in the LoTR set, kitchen-table players are going to be adding gingerbread-people to their Hobbit decks ...

an artifact that has two different artifact subtypes normally associated with artifact tokens

205.3g Artifacts have their own unique set of subtypes; these subtypes are called artifact types. The artifact types are Attraction (see rule 717), Blood, Clue, Contraption, Equipment (see rule 301.5), Food, Fortification (see rule 301.6), Gold, Incubator, Powerstone, Treasure, and Vehicle (see rule 301.7).

I keep thinking of ideas that are already represented on other cards.

"Food Incubator" could be the four and twenty blackbirds, but [[Bake into a Pie]] is already a card. "Food Clue" could be Hansel & Gretel's breadcrumbs, but [[Trail of Crumbs]] already exists. Cinderella's carriage could be a Food Vehicle, but [[Enchanted Carriage]] already exists (plus Vehicle isn't "normally associated with artifact tokens").

I think Food Treasure seems most likely, but I don't know what it might represent.

Silly idea: the Goose Hydra is named "Mother of All Geese" and lays Food Treasure tokens ~~named Golden Egg.~~ (Never mind that last bit, that name is taken.)

Looking forward to the new token type (probably an enchantment) and new batching mechanic. I could see Artifact/Enchantment/Token maybe? For things that seem magical

Can't decide if I'm more excited for a Rabbit Unicorn or an Elemental Raccoon.

For the Alpha creature type, a few possible interesting ones that would fit with the Wilds fairy tale theme might be:

  • Cockatrice
  • Pegasus
  • Paladin
  • Nymph
  • Basilisk

There's others like Goblins, Elves, Knights, Faeries, etc., but the ones above haven't had (as far as I know) any draft support in the past, and I assume he means it's a tribe that hasn't gotten such support before. Who knows, though, maybe we'll get Will-o-the-Wisp tribal!

[–] Lumun@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think the way it's written it could just mean Fairies, since I can't imagine they won't be a theme given what we know.

If not fairies, it could be Dwarves (though there has been tribal support before, it hasn't actually been an archetype), Ogres, or Trolls (are there enough trolls in fairy tales?)

[–] fubo@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My guesses are Nightmare or Giant.

[–] Kra@mtgzone.com 1 points 1 year ago

Both would be great imo
