weekend is not over yet
World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

It's also a long weekend for some.
Maybe washing’s birthday isn’t just for getting deals on mattresses and SUVs!
Finally some good news
Not really great news when you just lost a strategic town. I feel they are reporting every single kill, even the most minor ones, while underreporting the general state of things at a bigger level.
Avdiikva is a big loss, but just like Bahkmut it was inevitable as long as Russia will throw away men and materiel into the meat grinder, whilst Ukraine values their soldiers lives
They’ve made the Russians really pay for all their ‘big wins’ and ran a serious defense throughout, it was common to see 10+ Russian tanks and IFVs destroyed each day. The troop losses have been so numerous, that’s been hard to keep track of
“No dumb bastard ever won a war by going out and dying for his country. He won it by making some other dumb bastard die for his country.”
Any single plane shot down isnt small. And they allegedly shot down 4. Not just that, pilots may also be lost, which is just as if not even worse of a loss for russia.
At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if the pilots they are putting in fighters aren't experienced fighter pilots. Using Russia's thinking, I would be retaining my experienced pilots to train non-military pilots how to get into a fighter, fly it and attack with it. Then when they are all dead, use my experienced pilots.
Well it’s not like you can take a commercial airliner pilot, stick him in a fighter jet, and tell him to go drop bombs. While he may need less training he’d still require a significant amount of training before he could be expected to take on even relatively safe missions and return safely. It’s not like Su-34’s etc. roll off the assembly line quickly enough to regularly use them on kamikaze missions.
I read (sorry dont have a source) that russian fighter pilots fly commercial just to get flight hours, cause they dont get enough from the military. So uh... maybe a lot of them just didnt and maybe still dont have much experience at all. Or maybe they do now... those who still survive.
Last month, Business Insider's Sinéad Baker wrote that Russia was strategically trying to bait Ukraine into using up its Patriot stocks to leave itself vulnerable.
This is like the most idiotic strategy. It will take Ukraine a short amount of time to get more missiles. They are probably sending back every single MB of data from these Patriots to the US Army.
The US hasn't fought a country with actual jets in decades. This is priceless information for them and missiles are basically free.
"You see, ~~killbots~~ Patriots have a preset kill limit. Knowing their weakness, I sent wave after wave of my own ~~men~~ planes at them until they reached their limit and shut down." - Captain Zap Putin
Russia was throwing away upwards of a thousand men per day for a pile of rubble town. Much more useful for domestic propaganda than military value.
Great for Ukraine.
I'm glad, but watch Republicans use this as an excuse to say this is why Ukraine doesn't need U.S. support.
Edit: Wow, I should have scrolled down. We already have someone saying that in the comments.
So they get dogs now right?
This is the best summary I could come up with:
Footage circulating widely on social media was said to show the latest Russian fighter being shot down.
Footage reported to be showing Russian Su-34 shot down by Ukrainian forces near Dyakove, Luhansk region.
In December, Ukraine orchestrated a similar success story, with Ukrainian forces eliminating three Russian Su-34 fighter/bombers over two days.
Last month, Business Insider's Sinéad Baker wrote that Russia was strategically trying to bait Ukraine into using up its Patriot stocks to leave itself vulnerable.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that Russia's air superiority was key to capturing Avdiivka, the 'gateway' to Donetsk, launching hundreds of glide bombs in recent days to pummel Ukraine's troops.
Ukrainian Air Force Spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said the only way Ukraine can combat glide bombs is by shooting down the Su-34 and Su-35 planes that them, reported the Kyiv Independent.
The original article contains 382 words, the summary contains 141 words. Saved 63%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!
Su-34s are practically target practice at this point.
