Feinstein fell Tuesday. "All of her scans were clear and she returned home," the senator's office said, adding that her hospital visit lasted about two hours.

Why not retire at retirement age? I am sure there would be a younger democrat that would have been elected to do the job.

Seems like people get power and they don't want to give it up.

Oh and fix our social security system AND put the age back to 65.

[-] RampageDon@lemmy.world 48 points 1 year ago

She barely seems like she knows what's going on. I feel like it's people under her and around her that are keeping her propped up to hold onto the little power they might have. This is purely speculation with no actual evidence.

Weekend at Feinstein's

[-] legion02@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

It's basically elder-abuse IMO.

[-] Caradoc879@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 year ago

Our eyes are enough evidence. She's barely cognizant, just a step or two below vegetable.

The problem is that Republicans have said they will not allow another Democrat to take her seat on the committee, meaning we have to wait until Jan 2025 to redo the committees. With her absent, the Committe doesn’t have enough votes to pass anything above Republican opposition, and they have made it clear they will obstruct and block ALL judges appointed by Biden. Replacing her will mean a political shutdown for the next 16 months because the GOP is playing this game.

[-] CatsGoMOW@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

This is the answer that most people either aren’t aware of or don’t want to acknowledge. It’s really shitty, but that’s what it is.

[-] Iwasondigg@lemmy.one 45 points 1 year ago

Your weekly reminder that there is a minimum age requirement to serve in the senate, but bo maximum, and that needs to change.

[-] Gray@lemmy.ca 21 points 1 year ago

I don't even think this is necessarily an age issue. You can get Alzheimer's at 50 too. To me the issue is a shameful unwillingness from Democrats to acknowledge Feinstein's inability to fulfill her duties. Pelosi straight up called people sexist for suggesting Feinstein should step down. It's despicable. If I was in California, I'd be pretty fucking mad right now that my senator was being used as a tool to advance other people's interests by preying on her dementia.

[-] samus12345@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

I was mad that we re-elected that mummy in 2020, but her opponent turned out to be pretty crappy, too.

[-] Gray@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 year ago

Yeah, bullet dodged on that guy. It's pretty shitty when the choices are a racist or someone with Alzheimer's. Especially considering how large California is, I'm pretty sure they could have come up with better options.

[-] ZombieTheZombieCat@lemm.ee 9 points 1 year ago

Yeah, it's really fucked up to keep seeing comments from non-Californians blaming us for voting for her, as though we have any kind of real choice.

Regardless, it's yet another case of Americans blaming other Americans, as usual, instead of blaming a system that allows this shit to happen and doesn't give us viable choices of candidates in the first place.

[-] cassetti@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Feinstein isn't the only problem here. In fact the 118th Congress average age is the third oldest since 1789 .

I cannot understand why people continue voting for the same incumbent year after year. Not once have I voted for the a politician, then thought to myself in the next election "they listen to me and deserve my vote again". I refuse to vote twice for any politician unless I actually believe they care about the average person and I'll be honest that has never happened. Maybe I just grew up in the wrong era and didn't get to appreciate these politicians when they were in their prime twenty years ago?

I just don't get it. Are we voting based on a popularity contest of names we recognize on the ballot with a D or R next to their name? How f*cking pathetic. Look across the asile, both ways - maybe there's someone decent out there. Unlikely, but maybe they're better than the current guy who's been there for thirty years.

Politicians like diapers should be changed often, and for the same reason.

How about people just stop voting her into office?

Her failure to get the fuck out of the way is obstructionist. She is an asset only to the fascist shits on the other side of the aisle who benefit from a zombie occupying her seat.

Retire already. Or hurry up and have a stroke or something - just quit being a ball and chain to actual progress.

[-] Adeptfuckup@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

She has moderate to severe dementia. Either Alzheimer’s or lewybody . So she can live for awhile longer yet. So look for more weekend at Bernie’s moments in the near future. Popcorn? 🍿

Resign for fuck's sake! Newsom will appoint a replacement who is at least as far left as Feinstein, probably more so.

[-] CMLVI@kbin.social 13 points 1 year ago

Therein lies the problem.

I vote D basically straight ticket, because that's the only option I have in my state. But traditional Dems still only want us drifting so far left; corporate interests still stranglehold politics on both sides. Dems just have the decency to support general human rights while transferring wealth.

For someone her age, you go to the hospital for every fall.

This doesn't make me think she's any more decrepit, honestly. I already knew she is barely there.

[-] eran_morad@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

Fucking hell, get rid of the goddamn fossils!

I got really frustrated at reddit for constantly questioning why she won't retire, when the reality is we should be questioning why we keep voting her into office.

The sentiment is spreading to here.

[-] asteriskeverything@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I have a guess! Uninformed democrats voting party line, name familiarity enforces it, possibly some even remember when she was "good", and incumbents usually have easier time at winning the votes.

I am sure there are probably many Republicans who vote for her to keep her seat occupied and useless. It's not uncommon in California for some ballots to have positions with only Democrats running so it's also a pick your poison for the right, and candidates in california can be pretty progressive.

[-] magnor@lemmy.magnor.ovh 13 points 1 year ago

The US Senate saw Weekend at Berny's and turned it into a political system.

[-] Dntshoot@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

She’s on deaths door. I don’t know why she doesn’t retire

[-] CodingCarpenter@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

You assume it's her choice at this point. She's a decrepit puppet with some dick weeds hand up her ass telling her what to say and what to vote for. It's as farcical as weakened at Bernie's. I wouldn't be surprised to see her hand raise on a fucking string

The first fall is nearly always the first obvious sign it is the beginning of the end for the elderly. :(

Certainly can be. Falls that lead to permanent disability, or loss of function are "sentinel events." Hip fractures are really a bad sign specifically. Like, so bad that you gotta square away wills and end of life care.

[-] Steak@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 year ago

Yep my wife is an xray tech. Old people and broken hips are a very bad combo. They usually die from complications associated with it.

[-] BrudderAaron@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

I am not familiar with her, so I cannot really say for certain what I think about her. What I CAN say is if a minor fall puts you in the hospital for a couple of hours, maybe you're not fit to be in a seat of power.

[-] SheeEttin@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago

A minor fall could put anyone in the hospital, if you hit something just right. She's unfit for other reasons.

[-] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

That's not the issue. A fall can hurt and I'd want a politician to make sure they're not concussed.

The issue is stuff like a few months ago where she was out of office for weeks/months and when she came back she tried to argue with reporters that it didn't happen, because she couldn't remember that for an extended period of time she was physically/mentally unable to work.

Even when she was "better" she has no clue what's happening around here.

She's too old to even fall down.

[-] Snapz@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

She (and I'm sure her handlers more recently) have destroyed any positive legacy she would have had. She needs to leave in shame, that's all that's left for her unfortunately.

[-] randon31415@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Can we do a trade? Feinstein retirement for a McConnell retirement? And if they are open to that, maybe trade Murkowski for Machin?

[-] autotldr@lemmings.world 8 points 1 year ago

This is the best summary I could come up with:

WASHINGTON — Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., fell at home Tuesday and visited the hospital to get checked out, her office said.

All of her scans were clear and she returned home,” a Feinstein spokesperson told NBC News in an email Wednesday.

TMZ first reported Wednesday morning that the 90-year-old senator paid a visit to the hospital after she tripped and fell Tuesday at her San Francisco home.

Feinstein's health has been closely watched — this year, she missed three months of work in the Senate after she was hospitalized with shingles.

She has rejected calls to resign and insists she will remain a senator until her term ends in January 2025, then retire.

Three House Democrats are locked in a competitive battle to succeed Feinstein in the solidly blue state in the November 2024 election.

I'm a bot and I'm open source!

[-] BarterClub@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago

Just retire. Who cares what the DCCC says? You're going to die soon at 90 anyway.

[-] sarcasticsunrise@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 year ago

Yep this is it. She's done. Bake her away, toys
