I feel so sorry for short-faced dogs. They almost always have breathing problems. We did that to them on purpose for our own amusement and now people want to keep that going. It's disgusting.

[–] Lepsea@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just like munchkin, how the fck does a cat/dog with halves the limb is cute?

[–] Misconduct@startrek.website 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Or the hairless ones. They can't even sunbathe or groom themselves and that's like a cat's favorite thing to do. Cats also love to be warm and some idiotic sweater isn't a replacement for the fur they're supposed to have. "But I'm allergic" tf kind of selfish argument is that? You feel so entitled to a pet that you have one made for you to the detriment of the animal? It's seriously so gross.

[–] Shiggles@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 year ago

They’re not even hypoallergenic, they make less dander but they make the same protein people are allergic to.

[–] kratoz29@lemm.ee 11 points 1 year ago

The worst thing is that I think old pugs were nicer than "modded" ones.

[–] MBM@lemmings.world 5 points 1 year ago

They're illegal in some countries, for good reason

[–] dojan@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Almost? Are there ones that don't?

[–] Imgonnatrythis@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yep. There are strong movememts to undo what is really a very recent and very American practice of breeding in Brachycephaly. The American Kennel Club shamefully has contributed to these standards and glorified them in pure bred animals. Look at historical drawings and paintings of pugs as an excellent example. They were typically much thinner and had much longer snouts than what is idealized today. An increasing number of European breeders led quite strongly by the Germans are breeding Retro Mops or old fashioned healthier pugs. This has unfortunately not caught on in US (fuck the AKC - seriously), but retro pugs which are cross bred typically with terriers are starting to be a thing with a few select breeders. I have a retro mop. He outruns every single dog in his weight class in the dog park both in speed and endurance. He doesn't need a harness, he has a strong neck and uses a collar. No breathing issues whatsoever. For archival purposes please check out https://pugdogpassion.com/ Therese Rodin has been a huge influence in this modern movement and I wish everyone would review her teachings or speak to her before considering purchasing a Brachycephalic dog.

[–] dojan@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Oh yeah! I'd actually heard of people trying to breed away the smashed in snout on pugs.

Honestly I'm rather against breeding dogs for appearances in general. Berner Sennen dogs are super sweet, but they pretty much all die prematurely because of their incredibly high rate of inbreeding. I really don't get the appeal of the hunched back people are looking for in German Shepherds.

I mean it's literally eugenics, but for the sake of fashion. Absolutely ridiculous.

I try not to be an absolutist.

Cruelty for cruelty's sake is humanity's signature move.

You should see the animals we didn't find cuteness or utility in.

Oh wait, you can't, they're dead.

[–] gnutrino@programming.dev 16 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I mean rats and cockroaches for example are fucking everywhere (I know rats can be cute pets but most of them aren't). We're not as efficient an extinction machine as we like to think.

[–] timicin@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

only poor people have to deal with rats and roaches; which is why they're still around.

[–] Gamey@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You might find one deep in the jungle if you hurry, after this summer you will probably have to search tho!

[–] AllonzeeLV@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

"deep in the jungle"

Oh, you mean those ecosystems we cut down to build strip malls in to sell the plastic garbage we make by poisoning the oceans and the air?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

We keep a few around for the tourists to take selfies in front of.

[–] aesthelete@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago

If these liberals have their way they won't allow us to make plastic straws anymore, think of it! Using straws made out of a different material like it is from the beginning of time until 1965 or something!!!

Oh wait, you can't, they're ~~dead~~ on your plate.

[–] Sotuanduso@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

That's utility.

[–] Rodeo@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

I think that's one of the utilities they're talking about.

[–] Rubanski@lemm.ee 24 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I feel so bad for pugs. They have so much trouble breathing. Still, have you seen a humans CRT? Looks equally frightening haha

[–] Gamey@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Maybe that was the goal, who knows what those humans think!

[–] pingveno@kbin.social 17 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

There is a breed of pug, retro pugs, that is a Jack Russell terrier mix. They have elongated snouts, leading to a happier life. Most of the health problems that are unique to pugs, poof, gone.

[–] Sine_Fine_Belli@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, retro pugs are great!

A step in the right direction

[–] Slowy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Check out exotic toad bulldogs for a step into the very wrong direction

[–] ox0r@jlai.lu 2 points 1 year ago

Goddamn wtf

[–] euphoria@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

And to think that frenchies are the most sold dog breed in the USA... Makes me sad sometimes.

[–] MrPoopyButthole@lemm.ee 12 points 1 year ago

Like a microwaved Muppet

[–] Maraval26@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Isn’t that breed forbidden in some countries ? I remember reading something about the Netherlands…

[–] Shou@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Yup. Been banned since 2019. But in 2022, stricter measurements had to be taken in order to prosecute the breeders. In happier news, the university of Wageningen livestock research center started a project on breeding guidelines. Its aim is to perserve and improve the health of dog breeds. Working together with dog owner unions. Think instnces that train dogs for sports for example.

[–] DoubleOwl7777@feddit.de 11 points 1 year ago

short nosed dogs signify how messed up humanity is.

[–] Cyantraveller@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ed Bighead on the bottom Right.🐸

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

"BEV! That wallaby and his WEIRD friends are looking at my MRI again!"

[–] Talkurt@reddthat.com 1 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Top is an adolescent X-ray of what looks like a cat. Right shot is almost certainly not a pug with that fur.

Also notice the image linked isn’t anti pug. Nor does the top image say it’s a pug. Bottom one does imply it’s a pug scan.

Poster here is turning it into an anti pug thing.

Pugs certainly have issues with their head structure.

[–] pfannkuchen_gesicht@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think nobody claims the top pictures are from a pug. That paw x-ray isn't even real.

[–] FinnFooted@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Paw x ray is probably real, just of a kitten (or other baby paw). bones are more cartilage at birth then solidify more. Loook at the cute puppy x raysssss. Very similar

[–] euphoria@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

huh? both the top is a cat dude. i said it was a pug bc the og poster literally said the bottom two are from a pug

[–] SpoopyKing@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 year ago

The MRI is pretty likely fake too. Front facing MRIs are rare, and eyes don't usually have that kind of contrast pattern

[–] FinnFooted@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

The top is a different post from a bottom of a dude just posting an ex ray of a cat paw trying to say how cute it is. But you're right, left shows baby paw and right is adult paw. Misleading.

The response is just of a pug.
