Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

"But what about that latin american kid I've met in college who said that all the left has ever done in latin america has been bad?"

On the 13th of March in 1979, the People's Revolutionary Government (PRG) was proclaimed in Grenada after the Marxist-Leninist New Jewel Movement overthrew the state in a socialist revolution, with Maurice Bishop serving as Prime Minister.

After coming into power, Bishop stated the goals of the NJM: "We definitely have a stake in seeking the creation of a new international economic order which would assist in ensuring economic justice for the oppressed and exploited peoples of the world, and in ensuring that the resources of the sea are used for the benefit of all the people of the world and not for a tiny minority of profiteers".

The new government developed an ambitious social program, initiating a literacy campaign, expanding education programs, worker protections, and establishing farmers' cooperatives.

During the PRG's reign, unemployment was reduced from 49% to 14%, the ratio of doctors per person increased from 1/4000 to 1/3,000, the infant mortality rate was reduced, and the literacy rate increased from 85% to 90%. In addition, laws guaranteeing equal pay for equal work for women were passed, and mothers were guaranteed three months' maternity leave.

The government suspended the constitution of the previous regime, ruling by decree until a factional conflict broke out, ultimately leading to Maurice Bishop's assassination. President Ronald Reagan launched an invasion of Grenada a few weeks later, on October 25th, 1983.

"We have attempted to show in this Manifesto what is possible. We have demonstrated beyond doubt that there is no reason why we should continue to live in such poverty, misery, suffering, dependence and exploitation...The new society must not only speak of Democracy, but must practise it in all its aspects. We must stress the policy of 'Self-Reliance' and 'Self-Sufficiency' undertaken co-operatively, and reject the easy approaches offered by aid and foreign assistance. We will have to recognise that our most important resource is our people."

Pathetic: I will basically get invested in anybody who is remotely nice to me, or can keep a conversation going. Doesn't matter if we have anything in common or whatever, I'll fold to whatever you're saying just for the human contact because otherwise it is such a struggle.

Fwiw I can also build a bridge to a social connection by getting into someone's big interests, but that mostly leads to them talking about their thing and nothing else 24/7.

I hate people so much I have no idea how any of this is supposed to work. Who let me post online, anyway?

I saw a cool video once where someone went through the entire process to extract the platinum, and if i had to sum up the video it was an hour of a guy saying "now, the next step will fucking kill you if you're not a skilled chemist with the right equipment"

Felt really tired all day except for like an hour or so wherein I drew like I had ink in my veins. Happy with getting what often takes me hours done in a flash, but would enjoy not to feel like shit all day.

its interesting that "you should register to vote and still do so" is seen as like, a Democrat thing. like its mostly liberal celebrities who do that. if you see an "i voted" sticker on instagram, you immediately assume the person voted for democrats for some reason. and republicans get like actively mad at "you should vote" campaigns. which is so like, these campaigns never say who you should vote FOR. but republicans see higher turnout as an inherent threat? which i believe the stats bear out lmao like i believe higher turn out IS historically worse for republicans but still. wild

Bane was way more Jokerfied than the Joker in the Nolan movies. Joker says he doesn't look like a guy with a plan and he's a fog chasing cars and anarchy etc. But the movie demonstrates him pulling off a series of absolutely meticulously planned crimes and schemes thst are so precise they wouldn't work if it wasn't s movie. Bane, the guy with a plan is clearly throwing haphazard stupidity at every situation he's faced with and seemingly makes decisions based on the result of s roulette wheel. Plot for plot, Bane is waaaaay more chaotic and indicative of a complete lack of forethou than the Jokerer

Did the kind of food costing math I do at work sometimes while making falafel wraps. Holy hell, this is by far the most cost efficient really good food I make. I'm talking like maybe $1.50 per wrap. I costs more than that initially cause you can't just buy one wrap worth of ingredients, but once it's all mathed out, damn its cost effective as hell.

I need audio devices to have a lot more levels of low volume. The difference between 1 and 2 on my soundbar is sometimes the difference between can’t hear and too loud.

Reading Killers of the Flower Moon discussions and something Im surprised I havent seen yet in regards to Mollie and Ernests marriage is that Mollie would have very good reasons to not specifically seek out a white man who is as intelligent and clever as she is.

Like I see a lot of half joking remarks about how smart women marry dumb hogs all the time in real life, but as is the case with traditional marriage dynamics and even moreso for someone like Mollie, would it be in your best interests to have the man whos gonna have an immense amount of economic and direct power over you, be intelligent and clever about how he uses that, or would you feel safer if that guy is kind of a fucking moron who you can try and push in the directions you want while he is bumbling around trying to figure out what to do?

Like even aside from just the mental calculations here, it seems very natural that just the difference in how safe you might feel around dumb men vs smart men, would make you more likely to fall genuinely in love with them? Love isnt just magic, your material situation plays a huge part in it.

Whenever the trolley problem comes up, no one ever asks how many people are riding the trolley. Cause it running over 5 people in a row would most likely derail it.
