Did you file honestly or are you trying to do something illegal? If the first they will notify you and you can refile and it is no big deal, if you did something illegal they will still notify you and you will have 72 months to pay it back. Most likely you made a mistake and missed a coupon or something.

When do people actually go to jail over taxes then?

When you don't cooperate. Never if you cooperate then just keep fighting the bills and complaining by calling and saying you can't pay and need payment plans then ask for adjustments for all time. Also never if you were a business.

How accurate were your taxes? You should aim to not have a refund, that just means you overpaid.

More likely you made some sort of mistake or forgot something. They’ll be in contact if that happens and you’ll have time to fix it, appeal, or pay the difference.

Audits are not common. You should not worry. However, the irs site has a tool called "where's my refund" that you should check.

Even after i got messages verifying my return(s) were accepted (electronically and with direct deposit), it could take days or weeks or even months to get my returns. it's completely random, in my experience
