The Easter Rising was an insurrection, mostly in Dublin city, that lasted from April 24th until April 30th 1916.

The insurgents in Dublin amounted to 1,200 men and women from the nationalist militia the Irish Volunteers, the socialist trade union group Irish Citizen Army and the women’s group, Cumman na mBan.

The Irish Volunteers had been founded in 1913 in response to the blocking of Home Rule, or self government for Ireland by the Ulster Volunteers. The Citizen Army (with around 300 members) was formed during the Dublin Lockout of 1913 to protect strikers from the police. James Connolly afterwards directed it towards pursuit of an Irish socialist republic.

The Volunteers split after the outbreak of the First World War into the National Volunteers and the Irish Volunteers.

The National Volunteers, over 120,000 strong, led by Irish Parliamentary Party leader John Redmond, were pledged to support the British war effort and over 30,000 of them joined the British Army. The remaining 13,000 Irish Volunteers, led by Eoin MacNeill, were committed to keep their organisation intact and in Ireland until Home Rule was passed.

The Rising was planned in secret by seven men, mostly of the Irish Republican Brotherhood or IRB, who had formed a “Military Council” to this end just after the outbreak of the First World War. They were, Tom Clarke, Sean McDermott, Patrick Pearse, Thomas MacDonagh, Joseph Plunkett, James Connolly and Eamon Ceannt.

Their plans were not known to the membership of the Volunteers at large or to the leaders of the IRB and Volunteers, Dennis McCullough, Bulmer Hobson and Eoin MacNeill.

They had arranged with the Germans for a large importation of arms to be delivered on Good Friday, April 21st, but this shipment was discovered by the British off Kerry and its cargo lost.

At the last minute, the plans for the Rising were revealed to Eoin MacNeill who tried to call off the rebellion by issuing a “countermanding order”, but actually just postponed the outbreak from Easter Sunday to the next day, Monday.

The insurgents proclaimed an Irish Republic with Pearse as President and Connolly as commander in chief. They occupied positions around Dublin at the General Post Office (GPO), the Four Courts, the South Dublin Union, Boland’s Mill, Stephen’s Green and Jacobs’ biscuit factory.

Over the following week, the British deployed over 16,000 troops, artillery and naval gunboat into the city to suppress the rising. In the week’s fighting, about 450 people were killed and over 2,000 wounded.

The rebels’ headquarters at the GPO was bombarded into surrender, which Patrick Pearse ordered on Saturday, 29th April. However the fiercest fighting took place elsewhere, at Mount Street Bridge, South Dublin Union and North King Street.

There were also risings in county Galway, Enniscorthy in Wexford and Ashbourne in county Meath, but apart from an action at Ashbourne that killed 11 police, these caused little bloodshed.

Sixteen of the rebel leaders were executed, 15 in a two week period after they had surrendered and one, Roger Casement, in August.

Over 3,000 people were arrested after the rebellion and over 1,400 imprisoned. The Rising was not widely supported among the Dublin public and was condemned by the Irish Parliamentary Party and much of nationalist as well as unionist opinion. However, combined with other factors, such as the continued postponement of Home Rule, the growing casualties of the First World War and the threat of conscription, the Rising and its repression helped to increase the strength of the radical nationalists in Sinn Fein.

This party, which had not participated in the rebellion, was adopted as a vehicle by the veterans of the Rising and pledged to withdraw from the Westminster Parliament and set up an Irish one.

Sinn Fein went on to win three by-elections in 1917 and a general election in 1918, leading to their proclamation of an Irish Republic in January 1919 and the start of the Irish War of Independence.

my brain keeps stringing me along like it might some day work how I want it to work, which makes it hard to throw my hands up and say "ok, this is just how I am"

Just read the Spider Man: Fake Red manga. It takes "anyone can wear the mask" to the next level giving the suit to a regular kid without powers. Reminds me of The Ember Knight (fantastic manhwa btw)

Shame it got cancelled cuz of poor sales. Was shaping up to be a cool as hell story.

how the fuck am I supposed to deal with armored enemies in Helldivers? Like what the fuck man, it seems like so many weapons are just fucking useless. Basically the quasar cannon is the only thing that allows me to deal with them ever, everything else just sucks incredible ass

Steven Pinker wrote a review of a Malcolm Gladwell book in which he basically calls him a credulous rube. And I feel like while true, it's messed up for pinker to say it.

Nothing makes me realize my manager has no idea what we do than getting forwarded an email about company policy on something that isn't relevant to anyone in the department.

One job I applied to once had a pre-interview screener takehome project that wanted you to train an image recognition algorithm, write API, containerize it with docker, and publish it. Like no part of it particularly difficult, but very time consuming for a take home project. Also, with step one they didn't specify if they wanted the model to be really simple so I'm sure there are people that spent a day tweaking it. Like it's involved to the point of disrespectful.

Rambling about my day

Spent some of the day tormenting myself about approaching my crush today. Its been almost week since we saw each other and It was a light day at work, but I had just enough to keep me preoccupied. She usually passes by to drop off some stuff to work on, but not today. So I got stuck in a "should I, shouldn't I" of taking a quick break to see if I just happened to run into her, but no luck on that front.

Later on in the day she passed by my work area and said hey, but I was in the middle of a video call with my boss and by the time I turn to see her she had already gone. Usually I'd get up and say hi back and have some small talk with her, but I couldn't. I felt kinda bad about itcri

But later on she passed by again and I said hey and complimented her on her haircut. Drew a cute smile from hershy

Later I asked an old co-worker if he wanted to go out for some drinks with the team later on this week. He usually invites me out to places, so I figured I'd return the favor. He saw the text , but didn't replywtf

I probably shouldn't think much of it, but I'm pretty self-conscious about asking people to hang out. I'm usually the type to tag along with people rather than take the initiative, but I've been trying to get more comfortable doing so since last year. Only problem is that so far I've had little success if any at all. I've been turned down or cancelled on more often than not and it just gets to me. I figure no one really wants to hang out with me all that muchsadness It is what it is though.

Last thing that happened before getting home was witnessing a lady on a bike get knocked off her bike by a delivery cyclist. I was on a walk and I mostly just heard her come crashing down to the ground after getting grazed by the other bike. I had taken one step further before I realized that most of the people around her were just staring so I turned back and was going to help her up. I asked her if she was alright and she just kind of stared at me. I got a bit closer and tilted my head inquisitively, but she just kept on staring like I was doing something wrong. So I ended up just stopping and turning around.

I kind of get why you would initially stare that way. I got hit by a car once, thankfully it was a very low velocity collision so I was able to walk away. When I got back on the sidewalk there were a couple of guys that were looking at me and I initially stared them down still feeling pissed off, but I quickly broke out in laughter and let them know I was alright and how I had no idea how the driver didn't see me. But the lady didn't really even do that even though I was trying to check on her. IDK... just felt a bit weird and bad about it.

My opinions on other people change so rapidly, I'll go from considering someone a friend to hating them to thinking their my friend again over the course of a single day. This used to really cause problems for interacting with people but I've learned not to trust or act on my own thoughts until the opinion been solidified for a couple of weeks

Am I just a terrible person or is this some kind of condition?

depictions of the prophet where there's a veil over his face & surrounded by fire (badass halo) go so hard. not an iconoclasm head but i can't argue with the rules-lawyering result being extremely kickass
