“For over two decades, moviegoers have embraced the ‘Lord of the Rings’ film trilogy because of the undeniable devotion Peter, Fran and Philippa have shown…”

I thought this … until I saw The Hobbit. Their devotion was clearly waning at that point.

Heard the actors were less than impressed as well.

I think devotion for LOTR must still be there with them today. The Hobbit feels more like a project your boss forces you to do after getting incredibly rich by exploiting you with your first passion project.

This new one feels like them getting some extra cash to finally retire.

Del Toro was the director and Jackson stepped in last minute to savage.

EDIT: Salvage

[-] jacksilver@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

Yeah, I wouldn't blame Peter Jackson for that one. Although still not hopeful for a Gollum focused movie. Would have much preferred something outside of the known characters.

[-] rezz@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

Oh yeah I’m not particularly excited. But Peter Jackson * Time = Great usually.

[-] ryan213@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 months ago

Wait, savage or salvage? Sounds like both. 😂

Either way, I'm still very excited for this! I think they'll try to redeem themselves after The Hobbit trilogy.

[-] rezz@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

Salvage whoops. Yeah basically the movie got replanned last minute. Given the circumstances they are better films than they had any right to be.

It’s a shame we never saw Del Toro’s vision.

This is gonna suffer the same issue that Star Wars has. They have an entire world and myths to explore and they just stick with a core group to focus on.

[-] Lightborne@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Didn't they try to branch out in that Amazon series? People bitched about that one too.

[-] mjsaber@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 4 months ago

The Amazon series is fan fiction. This is part of the background story Tolkien wrote.

I'm not really interested in either, as they are both soulless capitalist cash grabs, but I think this has the possibility of being a decent (although completely unnecessary) film .

Tolkien "purists" that think the movies were written by Tolkien 💀

[-] illi@lemm.ee 1 points 4 months ago

I'm assuming this must be issue of what works pf Tolkien do they have rights for.

[-] newthrowaway20@lemmy.world 17 points 4 months ago

Is this gonna tie into the Gollum video game?

[-] kakes@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 months ago

Crossing my fingers for a shot-for-shot remake.

[-] PolyLlamaRous@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

Did you all know there is already a The Hunt for Gollum? Found it online. It's fan fiction from 2009 from the UK but reviews sound good.

[-] MyDogLovesMe@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Can confirm.

Have a copy

Good for ff!

[-] PolyLlamaRous@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Just finished it. I'm impressed! Like, yeah, it's fan fiction... But well done!

[-] ApollosArrow@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

What is the general premise? I have a hard time believing a whole movie can be filled.

[-] PolyLlamaRous@lemmy.world 0 points 4 months ago

Go watch it. I don't want to give any spoilers, but it's the search for Gollum. I found it free on YouTube. It's 40 minutes or so. Tell me how it is.

[-] ApollosArrow@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Well, I did not know this thing existed at all.

I am very torn. While I appreciate the love that went into this project (and you can see it). It doesn’t really offer much to the larger story and probably didn’t beed to be 40min. If it were part of a tv series, I think it would likely slot in well, with some additional parallel Shire content going on.

[-] PolyLlamaRous@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

Yeah and thanks for watching it. I felt simular. I liked watching it because I'm a big fan, but it was their love and passion for it that got me. And for what it is I think they did a great job. It could have been shorter or had more other content... But I can only assume there was some budget issues as it was nonprofit made.

[-] BigTrout75@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

I'm fine with a 4 hour movie, just bring back intermissions.
