Shocked Pikachu...

Use crappy messenger software (Slack, Discord), get crappy outcomes.

[–] _______@poeng.link 6 points 5 months ago

To be Frank its not crappy software. To be me, it's crappy terms of service.

That's great, can you set up a server for me?

[–] makingStuffForFun@lemmy.ml 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Just ask an AI how to do it. Soon you'll probably be able to ask one to do it for you.

[–] helenslunch@feddit.nl 16 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Why? so it can feed me wrong answers and run me around in circles while I ask it questions?

now when you get the prompt 'Accept all connections to Botnet(.)ru' , press yes

Check out LM Studio. Very easy to get started and runs on both CPU and GPU.

Sure, it takes me about 5 minutes plus some waiting for the system to initialise.

If you pay for the hosting fee I'll do it for free since it's so quick and simple.

It's literally pasting one command to install a full GUI, open source web admin panel with one-click installations of apps.

You want Matrix Synapse, Nextcloud Talk, XMPP or mail-based chatting? I can also recommend Jitsi for teleconferences.

I've fallen for this trick too many times...

If you're serious about it, yeah I can.

I assume you're trying to imply in your comment that people are not going to use it if it's not easy.

It's unfortunate, but sometimes, having nice things can be a little hard. If people want to use the easiest thing under the sun, then they'll just have to accept the downsides that come with it. Sometimes, that means private companies will use private photos of people's underage children in AI training models that can generate deepfake pornography. What can you do? Convenience comes at a cost sometimes.

I'm not saying I agree with this of course, but that's just how things are in the world where all rules must follow the dollar.

Zulip is great, they offer free hosting for open source projects and research labs.

Yeah I know, how are they going to help me self-host?

[–] oh_gosh_its_osh@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You could pay them for their support. I know it sounds a bit cheeky, but the zulip folks are really great and the product is not one of the open core solutions where they strip out features based on your plan, like some others do.

I can? How?

You say that like it's a bad thing for companies to monetize their work.

For free? No.

Gonna cost you time, money, or data.

I’m a big Zulip advocate. I was using it globally at my previous employer for a global org and it’s pretty great.

Still tricky if you run a public facing site, there are constant crawlers and bots and any of those could be feeding AI.

[–] Potatos_are_not_friends@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Don't put private data on your public facing website?

[–] _______@poeng.link 5 points 5 months ago

Is such a thing even possible? 👽

Well of course, that's true of any and all publicly accessible data. At least with self-hosting, your private channels still don't get mined against your wishes
