I didn’t know irony could be this disgusting

[-] intelisense@lemm.ee 84 points 5 months ago

This is fucking retarded, of all the people to get free meals for life, they choose someone who is so rich it wouldn't surprise me if he could buy the entire chain of restaurants.

[-] ringwraithfish@startrek.website 66 points 5 months ago

That's the point though, right? It's all publicity. They don't want to give it to someone who may actually use it. Give it to the billionaire who will never use it so.

[-] MeekerThanBeaker@lemmy.world 15 points 5 months ago

Even if he did stop and order at McDonald's, he'd probably still pay for his meal.

Would be pretty funny for him to go in during rush hour and order free food for everyone waiting in line using the card... though there probably is some fine print.

Even if he did stop and order at McDonald’s, he’d probably still pay for his meal.

I'm betting someone like Gates stopped carrying a wallet with money in it decades ago and is so far disconnected from the price of anything because of his vast wealth that he may not even think to pay for his meal, not because he feels entitled, but because he has had 'people' to do that for him for so long.

He had a game show thing on Ellen a while ago where he thought something cost $25 that was a couple dollar item.

He absolutely has no idea how much everyday items cost.

[-] TwoThirtyAM@lemm.ee 2 points 5 months ago

I feel like a game like this would be hard for most people who earn a strong professional salary, let alone billionaires.

[-] TrainsAreCool@lemmy.one 1 points 5 months ago

It's one happy meal, Ellen. What could it cost, $25?

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

They don’t want to give it to someone who may actually use it.

They do, at least to some degree. They would love to brag about Bill Gates entertaining an entire Lolita Express's worth of business colleagues at one of their restaurants. And they would love for people to flock to a franchise location to catch a glimpse of Gates, in the same way nightclubs will pay a premium for models and movie stars to show up at their venues.

The publicity of McDs being associated with the Gates brand is worth far more than the number of burgers Gates could consume, even if he shut down a venue buying people hamburgers on their dime.

I had one in college. They do give them out for scholarships and stuff like that to college kids and those in lower income classes. It honestly really helped.

I hate McDonald’s now though lol.

[-] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 18 points 5 months ago

This happens all over the place. I work in media and quite often the famous personalities who have a net worth in the millions get catered meals while the crew has to bring their own lunch.

This is just one example, but it’s so fucking backwards how the more money you have, the more free shit you get.

[-] SkybreakerEngineer@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

Not to mention it's McDonald's food of all things

[-] mipadaitu@lemmy.world 51 points 5 months ago

Turns out McDonald's is the good guy after all.

Trying to slowly assassinate the worlds billionaires with high cholesterol and CHF.

[-] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 11 points 5 months ago

Too bad he probably never uses it!

[-] Drusas@kbin.run 9 points 5 months ago

He's been known to eat at a local burger chain called Dick's, so he definitely eats fast food burgers. Dick's is much better than McDonald's, though, so I don't know if he eats there.

Give a man a dollar, and the IRS will tax it from you and you'll starve. Give a man a billion dollars, and he won't have to spend a penny of it on food...

I know I'm not the only one that sees the problem with this picture.

[-] Dkarma@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

Give a man a dollar and 37 cents of it goes to the military

[-] over_clox@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

And can't even buy a candy bar with it, before or after tax..

Edit: Funny that anyone would downvote my comment here. It costs almost twice as much for a candy bar as a bottle of beer where I'm from. $1.70 for a bottle of beer, like $2.95 for a candy bar. No shit.

Except when he puts all of his assets in financial constructions so he doesn't pay his share, hence normal people having to pay more.

[-] kandoh@reddthat.com 22 points 5 months ago

They should give it to medal of honor recipients if they're looking for publicity

[-] zabadoh@ani.social 10 points 5 months ago

Why? To kill them off faster?

[-] kandoh@reddthat.com 14 points 5 months ago

It just seems to fit that the highest honor in the United States would come with free McDonald's for life

[-] callouscomic@lemm.ee 5 points 5 months ago
[-] kandoh@reddthat.com 4 points 5 months ago

Probably too many of those to be economically sound.

[-] ShellMonkey@lemmy.socdojo.com 15 points 5 months ago

Wonder if they would revoke it if he just walked in and said "hey, you're gonna feed everyone in this city today..."

[-] Drusas@kbin.run 13 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Thought I was on Not the Onion for a moment there. Or the actual Onion.

[-] unmagical@lemmy.ml 11 points 5 months ago

That's kinda disgusting. In a world where we produce in excess the needs of everyone, but some must go without because of ilk like Gates and Buffett, the hoarders are blessed with the gift of also not having to pay for stuff themselves.

[-] pleb_maximus@feddit.de 9 points 5 months ago

Yeah, but he'd have to eat there. Don y'all have laws against cruel and unusual punishments over yonder?

[-] ICastFist@programming.dev 5 points 5 months ago

"bUt hE WoRkEd So HaRd tO aChIEvE iT!!"

We all know this is just for clout. It's unlikely that Bill goes to any McD anywhere, that's "below" him, but it still generates bait for brainwashed "entrepreneurs", who see this as "success attracting success". It's not. It's money wanting to show off to different money. You know how heads of state often gift one another useless trinkets as a token gesture? This is that.

[-] Num10ck@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

in the 1980s my dad somehow ended up with a business card from Carl's Jr with some note on it. whenever he showed it at the drive through, the manager would personally deliver the order and it was all free.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Bill Gates isn't Donald Trump. He wouldn't do that.

Edit: You people really think Bill Gates ever eats at McDonald's unless it's for a photo op?
