MODERATORS

In Ohio, doctors have worked to pass a ballot measure that enshrined reproductive rights into the state's constitution. In Texas, they've battled in court over a narrow exception to the state's abortion ban.

At least six Democratic doctors are running for competitive House seats this year, seizing on voters' concerns about reproductive health and high health care costs.

Excellent. We need more people with scientific backgrounds in government.

That said, we've had some spectacularly bad Republican medical practitioners in offices, so I would prefer more chemists, physicists and the like.

I’ll settle for them hiring experts as needed.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago

I think there is something to be said for having those experts make the actual decisions too.

Molecular biologists. I want to eat sweet chili pepper and hot tomato. Right now they are banned.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Sweet chilies are absolutely a thing

Good. Ecoactivists will hate it regardless.

They aren’t gmo and fuck off with your anti eco bullshit. They’re just a type of chile. You see them around. Hell bell peppers fit this description as well

I’m not anti gmo, but “eco activists hate x” dude, call them anti gmo activists.

They aren’t gmo

That's what I said. But if biologists will do exactly same with GE, then soon anti-gmo activists will flock.

Nice. Doctors are one of the groups of people in the best position to run for office, since they already make a good amount of money to keep themselves going in a political campaign. It's a lot more difficult for other professions to do the same without monetary backing.

Unfortunately, true. There's a number of terrible pseudoscience pushers out there. But that's exactly why we need actual pro-science people in political office. We need more scientists in general who actually understand the fields in question, rather than just lawyers who frequently ignore what their scientific advisors are saying.
