Anya Taylor-Joy rode home on VOD last week with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and the results thus far are all shiny and chrome. The latest adventure in George Miller's cinematic wasteland topped the iTunes VOD chart for July 1 and similarly lorded over the competition on the Fandango at Home chart for June 24 through 30. It's a slight bit of redemption for the critically acclaimed blockbuster actioner after it fell surprisingly flat at the box office with only $171.3 million globally against an estimated $168 million budget. Previously, the top spot on both charts had been held by John Krasinski's family comedy IF.

iTunes and Fandango both utilize different measures for their respective charts, meaning Furiosa dominated both in terms of the number of transactions and total revenue. Audiences are clearly still interested in seeing how Imperator Furiosa became the powerful leader seen in Mad Max: Fury Road, even if many didn't show up when the film graced theaters in late May. It seemingly marks the continuation of a trend that has troubled the industry of late, as viewers have shown they're more than willing to wait for the relatively quick turnaround of digital releases rather than go out to see movies on the biggest screen possible with some exceptions. David Leitch's The Fall Guy similarly struggled at the box office with a starry duo of Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt failing to draw crowds until its VOD release.

It was a good solid instalment. Maybe not as awe inspiring as the first movie simply because we’re now familiar with the visuals, but solid. More of what already worked. Nice that it gives some backstory and information on the geopolitical situation of the area.

One minor quirk was I didn’t like a few scenes where Hemsworth would try to play his character in a goofy way a la Jack Sparrow.

I swear they dubbed in Charlene Theron’s voice for Anya a time or two.

It was never going to be as good as Fury Road. There was just no way. So he didn't try. And I appreciate that. A few on the CG scenes were spotty, but it was better than some in the franchise, not as good as others. All in all, I enjoyed it and thought it was a ton of fun.

I'm super happy that it wasn't like Fury Road. I love Fury Road, but I don't want to see any more attempts at recapturing that lightning, because it never worked well.

Furiosa is a great installment because it's different and offers more than just action. One of the reasons I loved the first three films is them showing the post-apocalyptic world, giving us lore freaks something to munch over.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned enough is how well it will work with Fury Road for first time viewers.

Think of Fury Road as the sequel and this becomes an awesome pair of films.

The Furiosa plot through the films is great and the elevation of the action and its stakes in Fury Road after the plot foundations in Furiosa make for a brilliant “sequel”.

Dunno if Charlize Theron had a twin sister but Anya definitely nailed Charlize's voice.

Could not notice any cgi in the theater but at home yeah, but I would prefer this more than unhealthy productions. The movie is peak entertainment. Not a masterpiece like fury road but pretty damn fun.

[–] TheVelvetGentleman@hexbear.net 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I don't understand how people can say this. I saw both mad max movies in theaters, and the CG was so immersion breaking in both for me. Not just bits of odd looking shots here or there, but the majority of the movies. It looks like they did sky replacement or some other monkeying around. All the lighting looks off and there's that classic grey-washing on edges throughout. I don't know what I'm talking about; I just know it looks ass to me and I wish it didn't because they're fun movies.

[–] Eyck_of_denesle@lemmy.zip 6 points 4 months ago

I prefer movies like these than whatever the fk avatar 2 was. And immersion is idk, you can enjoy theatre performances even if the set is nothing. The bikes getting craned up in the first dementus vs evil guy was super rough. Other than that, it was very much fine for me.

It is a fun Sunday afternoon movie. The exaggerated noticeable CGI hurt it too bad, and at times the frame feels way too clean for a Mad Max movie. It had too large shoes to fill being associated with Fury Road. On the cinema the green screen is much more obvious than on a home TV as well.

[–] beowulf_50@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Honestly, I had a good time with this one. Definitely worse than Fury Road, but it’s still a good enough popcorn flick

[–] Cyberflunk@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I didn't even know it was in theaters, because fuck theaters.

[–] Hala@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

What's wrong with theaters?

[–] Mountain_Mike_420@lemmy.ml 10 points 4 months ago (2 children)

It was good. Not better than fury but way better than original mad max. Man that movie was horrible.

[–] gramie@lemmy.ca 11 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Did you see the version of Mad Max where they dubbed the Australian voices into American ones, because they felt Americans wouldn't understand the Aussie accent? That made the movie 100x worse.

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

Never knew such a version existed!?! That's...... Mental.

[–] Mountain_Mike_420@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 months ago

No. they all had Aussie voices but while reading up on why mad max was so bad I did see that they released a north American version with American accent voice overs! That’s crazy.

Turns out the reason they made 3 mad max movies (initially) was because they made the movie on a shoestring budget and it went on the be “the most profitable movie of all time!” And that fact still holds up today.

[–] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

one was shit, luckily the road warrior made sense at least.

[–] Mountain_Mike_420@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 months ago

Watching the road warrior tonight!!!!

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 10 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Argylle has a chance if it can escape the apple walled garden. It's almost as bad as being launched exclusively on paramount.

[–] Emperor@feddit.uk 6 points 4 months ago

Yeah, I enjoyed Argylle when I saw it in.the cinema, it"s a pity more people haven't got to see it since.

[–] RobMyBot@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 months ago

Argylle was so crazy and ridiculous, but they created no illusions about that, so I was prepared for it going in and honestly it was a pretty fun watch. It did feel a tad too long, though.

  • Mad Max 3 :Thunderdome
  • Mad Max 4 : Fury road
  • Mad Max 2 : The Road Warrior
  • Mad Max: Video Game 2015 - (Not a movie, but great immersive world building)
  • Mad Max 5 : Furiousia
  • Mad Max 1

It's a good film, the opening CGI sound stage was disappointing and probably turned off some reviewers, but ignore that and it's a fine member of the franchise. Like its totally a good movie to watch in the theater and bring a date with, fun times, no real complaints. It's only down in the list because the other entries were SO ICONIC!

[–] BrundleFly2077@sh.itjust.works 15 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Wowzers. This is a mad take. Thunderdome on top? Good for you 🤣

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

I'm fairness, Master Blaster does run the town.

I'd be swapping MM2 and 3's position in that list myself. Curious to hear others takes (will be watching Furiosa tonight).

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Ok... I'll justify it by the iconic moments i still remember

  • Mad Max 3: Thunderdome
    • Two men enter - one man leaves
    • Break a deal - spin the wheel
    • Ragady man has LOTS of guns hidden in his EDC
  • Mad Max 4 : Fury Road
    • Witness me!
    • Guitar Guy
  • Mad Max 2 : The Road Warrior
    • It was all a sand trick! Max threw his life away for sand!!
    • The whole story was told through the eyes of murder boomerang kid in his old age!
  • Mad Max 5 : Furiousia
    • The nipple clamps getting pulled out of thor was wild
  • Mad Max 1
    • So terrible, so bad, how did 2 get funded?
[–] BrundleFly2077@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Best reply ever. My hat off to you, dude.

Thunderdome will always be bottom of the list for me, but I no longer think you’re criminally insane :) You did remind me that Masterblaster was a thing. So thanks for that!

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 1 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Did you watch mad max 1? No way that's better then thunderdome. It barely made any narrative sense.

Or is something in thunderdome specifically irritating you? The naked saxophone blind guy?

[–] BrundleFly2077@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 months ago

I guess there’s something crude and fierce about Mad Max 1 that I find really endearing. Maybe it’s not a good film, but it’s got an enormous amount of heart. You can tell Miller was gonna be big from the first :)

When only the first three existed, which was true for my whole childhood, Thunderdome felt like too big a departure from the grit and grime of the first two. It felt sort of overinflated and a camp.

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 9 points 4 months ago (3 children)

Had too much noticeable CG for my liking really hurt my overall enjoyment of it unfortunately. It also honestly could have been 30 minutes shorter, but that's a criticism I have of nearly all movies coming out lately.

[–] maegul@lemmy.ml 12 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Funny. I watched it just recently. I noticed something a bit CGi very early on, realised that that whole thing would be a distraction and turned that off in my brain … didn’t notice a thing afterwards and didn’t care … the film looked great.

I keep saying it … this practical v CGI thing has gone too far.

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (2 children)

I'm glad that works for you but I can't really just turn something off like that. I was also speaking from recent experience as I just saw it two weeks ago.

[–] maegul@lemmy.ml 5 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

I can understand that. Really don’t want to ~~stack~~ attack you personally or anything. It’s part of why I describe it as a cultural thing that’s ~~give~~ gone to far. If everyone is talking about it, it’s on our minds as it was on mine. My ability to ignore may be significantly attributable to not great eyesight (even with glasses, there’s something that’s lost from your peripheral vision IME).

[–] aStonedSanta@lemm.ee 1 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

It reminds me of my feeling of mediocre acting. Fuck that. Give me good. Or shit. I wanna laugh or be swept up lmao

[–] Crashumbc@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Blame the Asian markets. From what I understand movies are considered an "event" expected to last well over two hours.

I very much agree that most movies have way too much filler added to reach their current lengths.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 months ago

Sorry, what did your liking hurt exactly?

[–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I'd watch it in theaters if tickets didn't cost at least $15 with additional service fees if you try buying them online.

[–] lud@lemm.ee 4 points 4 months ago

I wish our theaters were that cheap

[–] boatsnhos931@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] Emperor@feddit.uk 17 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I had that the other day. It will pass.

[–] boatsnhos931@lemmy.world -4 points 4 months ago

Furiosa is going to be my dommy mommy and wipe my ass

[–] The_Che_Banana@beehaw.org 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

So yeah we watched this. First half was pretty ok, but you know, just felt like it was coasting off Fury Road...and the middle bit got...a bit long and the last part...holy fuck would someone please kill Thor and shut him the fuck up ....my god the movie could have. should have ended so much earlier.

[–] Eyck_of_denesle@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 months ago

I disagree. The ending was quite satisfying. It wasn't like the captain marvel ending.
