First of all, a big thank you to @ruud@lemmy.world and team for building such a good place for us to hang out. You guys rock!

I am interested to see your opinion on the recently launched Threads from meta, specially around possible federation/defederation in the future

Some instance owners are open to federation, some takes wait and see approach, while some will block them outright as seen on https://fedipact.online/

For the health of Lemmy and the fediverse I really hope that a license banning for profit use of federated and user content can be created and used by all instances.

We must prevent poisoning of the fediverse by corporations at all cost.

Fully agreed

Defederate them. I don't believe they are coming into the fediverse with any good intentions.

[-] kratoz29@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

Their are coming here with good intentions, for them.

I think if we federate with Facebook, it will be good for a while. they will play nice while they grow their userbase. but as soon as they have a majorety of users, they will start pushing updates that make facebooks instance(s) incomparable with other regular instances and since most users will be on Facebook, the rest of Lemmy and the fediverse will die. this type of thing has happened before and if we allow it to, it will happen again. we cannot federate with corporations

They’ve had so many sign ups already the instant they start federating they will have the majority of users. There’s no way it ends well unless we block them

[-] Coelacanth@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Indeed. All would instantly turn into only Threads content through sheer volume of engagement and comment sections would flood with Meta users.

We must keep them out of the fediverse. It's another case of the good old "embrace, extend, extinguish". Read more about how Google killed XMPP, for a good example: How to Kill a Decentralised Network (such as the Fediverse)

you are not me and your experiences will vary but i didn't get out of that hypercapitalist hellscape of facebook just so that facebook comes to a little place not yet squeezed dry of value by musks and thiels of this world. i see no point in federating with them in first place, so blocking them from get go seems to be the better way

I truly think that welcoming corporate interests into the fediverse is very much counter to everything that I find compelling about it. Once meta carves out a seat at the table the dream of a digital commons operated by and for the community is dead.

I’m interested to hear more on this as well. While I’m not completely opposed to larger integrations, I’m doubtful that they will have the best interests of ActivityPub and the fediverse at heart.

This was posted on mastodon.world, also ran by Ruud mwadmin@mastodon.world - Update regarding Meta/Threads:

We hear that the Threads app is coming July 6th. It will at first not support ActivityPub, so it can't talk to Mastodon yet. That will be added later.

We're very much in agreement with @tchambers , see https://www.timothychambers.net/2023/07/03/instagram-threads-and.html As he said: ““Watching Like A hawk, with our fingers on the block button.” We will NOT be pre-emptively taking a “Fediblock as a Frist Strike” position.”

I see. Hope they're ready to press that block button on the very first sign of bullshittery though.

[-] starlinguk@kbin.social 8 points 1 year ago

Meta is paid to spread disinformation. Why would anyone want them on the Fediverse? They're literally the reason for Brexit, for example.

[-] Gerula@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

So basically until Threads we where alone in our little corner of the internet. Reddit is slowly dying, Twitter is slowly dying, new people are comming. Everything is working great.

Meta is now comming to infest and milk the Fediverse and somehow we must let them in our house, in our instances. Why?
