The most famous female labor activist of the nineteenth century, Mary Harris Jones—aka “Mother Jones”—was a self-proclaimed “hell-raiser” in the cause of economic justice. She was so strident that a US attorney once labeled her “the most dangerous woman in America.”

Born circa August 1, 1837 in County Cork, Ireland, Jones immigrated to Toronto, Canada, with her family at age five—prior to the potato famine with its waves of Irish immigrants.

She first worked as a teacher in a Michigan Catholic school, then as a seamstress in Chicago. She moved to Memphis for another teaching job, and in 1861 married George Jones, a member of the Iron Molders Union. They had four children in six years. In 1867, tragedy struck when her entire family died in a yellow fever epidemic; she dressed in black for the rest of her life.

Returning to Chicago, Jones resumed sewing but lost everything she owned in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. She found solace at Knights of Labor meetings, and in 1877, took up the cause of working people. Jones focused on the rising number of working poor during industrialization, especially as wages shrunk, hours increased, and workers had no insurance for unemployment, healthcare or old age.

Jones first displayed her oratorical and organizing abilities in Pittsburgh during the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. She took part in and led hundreds of strikes, including those that led to the Haymarket riot in Chicago in 1886. She paused briefly to publish The New Right in 1899 and a two-volume Letter of Love and Labor in 1900 and 1901. A beloved leader, the workers she organized nicknamed her “Mother Jones.”

Beginning in 1900, Jones focused on miners, organizing in the coal fields of West Virginia and Pennsylvania. For a few years, she was employed by the United Mine Workers, but left when the national leadership disavowed a wildcat strike in Colorado. After a decade in the West, Jones returned to West Virginia, where, after a violent strike in 1912-1913, she was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder. Public appeals on her behalf convinced the governor to commute her twenty-year sentence. Afterward she returned to Colorado and made a national crusade out of the tragic events during the Ludlow Massacre, even lobbying President Woodrow Wilson. Later, she participated in several industrial strikes on the East Coast between 1915 and 1919 and continued to organize miners well into her nineties.

Despite her radicalism, Jones did not support women’s suffrage, arguing that “you don’t need a vote to raise hell.” She pointed out that the women of Colorado had the vote and failed to use it to prevent the appalling conditions that led to labor violence. She also considered suffragists unwitting dupes of class warfare. Jones argued that suffragists were naïve women who unwittingly acted as duplicitous agents of class warfare.

Although Jones organized working class women, she held them in auxiliaries, maintaining that—except when the union called—a woman’s place was in the home. A reflection of her Catholic heritage, she believed that men should be paid well enough so that women could devote themselves to motherhood.

In 1925, she published her Autobiography of Mother Jones. She is buried in the Union Miners Cemetery in Mount Olive, Illinois.

"I'm not a humanitarian, I'm a hell-raiser."

cw weird medical/drug stuff IdkThinking about how I took loprazelam for anxiety a bunch of years ago. Thinking about how one made you utterly normal and chill, two turned your legs to jello and left you placid and in peace on the couch. I kind of miss it, that shit would be so easy to abuse though.

My trainer at work has been unknowingly pissing off like half the department throughout my and my teammates training (while knowingly pissing us and our supervisor off) and im just collecting lore and trying to understand how she still has a job

Before she was in her current position her carelessness caused someone in a different department to have to come in at 4am multiple times, with no warning. And they found out they had to come in because my trainer would realize at around 2-3 am that they didn't tell them to make the shit they needed so my trainer would call them via teams until they woke up

This woman makes at least 65k a year but I think its more than that

Just wanted to transcribe this funny part from a drama video about the MrBeast situation

oompaville: "It's not- You're not being like 'MrBeast is the antichrist', I mean maybe, a little bit."

[...]

Dawson: "Yeah, I cut that part out."

oompaville: "Did you? I watched it minute one. [...]"

Dawson: "Yeah, my point wasn't that he is the antichrist, but I wanted to basically say, you know, people at his company speculate that he's the antichrist, but then it's like, total hearsay, I have no evidence of that."

oompaville: "People at the own company do?"

Dawson: "Yeah yeah yeah, I mean, he's in the bible though, and people are sorta joking, feeling around with the idea is the impression I get from it, you know? It's like, one girl talked to me about it, like explaining her theory to me in detail and actually referencing bible verses and shit and like I'm not Christian, I don't know any of this, and it seemed like she was looking for me to sort of offer her comfort or validation to be like 'Nah, that's crazy' or whatever."

Imagining some poor intern girl nervously clutching her crucifix whenever MrBeast passes her in the hallway, just in case.

Listened to the new JPEG (twice). Liked the final tracks a lot, so researched. Final track samples Janet Jackson, but altered to be Laurie Anderson/Big Science (I'm honestly taken aback that this isn't an Anderson cover or something). Second to last track features Spielberg's daughter (!) (beautiful, sounds like Weyes Blood/FKA Twigs' Mary Magdalene). Fourth to last track samples, uh, a soul cover of Future's Turn on the Lights, and which was probably just procedurally generated by AI(!!!)

This dude is so far ahead of everyone else its insane.

I'm very surprised to learn that Kate Bush is English, having barely heard any of her music, because she sounds so irish in army dreamers. Like she has the exact same pronunciation and accent as people I serve in the pub.

Apparently her mother was Irish and she did learn Gaeilge as an adult. I just didn't expect someone half Irish to sound 200% Irish

reddit-logo suspended my account for saying that Venezuelan fascists burning down a hospital are a perfect reason why there should be red terror and no excuses should be made for it in r/trueanon. maybe they didn't like the phrase, "these kulaks need composted"

It's going to be like last election cycle and I'm just going to need a new account

Let me tell you a story, about a tesla. The tesla was driving 80km/h using "traffic-aware cruise control", on a rural road, with one car behind. Out in the distance was a cyclist, the driver had seen this cyclist in good time, and knowing the tesla, plus being able to see far out that there was no car coming in the other direction, it decided to pull well out into the other lane a good distance from the cyclist. Hoping that this would avoid "the problem". But alas, she should have known. The tesla decided the cyclist was dangerously close, blaring the warning sound and slamming the brakes, in an instant, the tesla lost at least 15km/h. The driver cursed, fae knew ze should have disengaged the cruise control, the tesla had done this many other times when there were cyclists, but des had hoped, that if given enough space, the tesla wouldn't do that. Now it knows to always disengage CC, to not do so is dangerous.

thinking-about-it Cold war anticommie propaganda really liked hammering on alleged suppression of artistic expression, but is there anywhere artists are less free to speak than the imperial core today? There aren't (as many) literal state apparatuses of censorship, but the twin forces of both "the market" and a razor-thin overton window often keep anyone who doesn't fall in line ideologically from speaking their mind artistically.

lea-sweat sorry uh I was thinkin bout how a TV or movie series made for either The Last Girl Scout or Unjust Depths might be neato, and then I realised how many different ways that either of those would never happen

Being raised to believe people are ignorant or stupid instead of malicious means that even if I can understand that there are paid actors lying their tits off, in my personal life I still find it very hard to call out a lie directly and have been trapped in many exploitative situations

Chemistry students are busy memorizing thar big chart. But in physics we derive the big chart from first principles, with all both elements: hydrogen and helium.

The air quality. It's not good! I'm basically hugging the CR box I made last year. It's working pretty well but I can still feel the smoke in some rooms.

By collecting mushrooms in the forest/in a hut/in a cottage/in the druid lands, you are furthering stereotypes of witches. you don't NEED to collect mushrooms, you can use some kind of moss. You're walking right into the stereotypes. You don't even know magic, what are you doing? MY grimoire overfloweth with magic!
