Grub rescue should come with a hug or maybe a nice picture of a landscape.

[-] cheddar@programming.dev 23 points 2 months ago

A random gif with a cute cat or a dog would be nice.

Difficult to stuff this in the MBR for non EFI users. AFAIK grub can display background pictures though.

Be not afraid, for I bring good news of a functioning CPU and memory, tools to inspect your disks, and as foretold in the time of the smartphone you may even still have Internet access to read all of the documentation.

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 26 points 2 months ago

Implying I can understand the documentation even when it's available.

I learnt a ton about Linux by fucking up my boot config and being too stubborn to just nuke and pave

299792458ms is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.

This is either you preventing suicide or extending the partition rescue nightmare.

[-] lurch@sh.itjust.works 37 points 2 months ago

it's significantly less scary if you have a backup

[-] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 47 points 2 months ago

blows off dust

here we go.... april 2007? uhoh...

[-] ICastFist@programming.dev 18 points 2 months ago

Eh, it's not like much happened between 2007 and now, maybe just a couple of updates

😁or if you only store OS stuff on your local drive and have all data in your cloud including game saves

[-] DmMacniel@feddit.org 22 points 2 months ago

And by cloud you mean your server in the basement, right?

[-] lurch@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 months ago

Always put the important servers in the attic, where they get fried by the summer heat, instead of the basement, where the flood hits worst.

[-] DmMacniel@feddit.org 13 points 2 months ago

you could put the server on a floatation device in the basement.

[-] MigratingtoLemmy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Joke's on you I use my server as pink-noise producers

[-] Petter1@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

I have it at my Friends Location and it is backed up on a hetzner clone that we can switch to without interruption if our own ship goes down

Of course running stable debian, 😁 secure stable debian in server distrohoppibg at home

"sudo kms" is such a mood 😭😭😭

[-] Sanctus@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

I have a server I've abandoned because it does this every time it reboots. Use an old desktop from work instead.

[-] jbk@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 months ago

sd-boot or directly booting EFI stubs rocks
