The Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito has revealed that he thinks The Mandalorian & Grogu movie could just be the beginning of a new Star Wars trilogy.

"As in the MCU… Disney will figure out how to join all of these characters into one really great movie or TV show. That’s my sense of where it will go," Esposito said during an appearance at Dragon Con (via Culture Slate). "Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau have a new vision, continuing on with a Mandalorian movie… My sense is that it’s all going to converge at one point or another and we’re going to have another set of… [a] trilogy, or more, of films."

Esposito plays Moff Gideon in the Disney Plus series, but he hasn't been confirmed to return in the upcoming movie yet, since he died in season 3 (though, a surprise return can never be ruled out). Pedro Pascal is returning as titular bounty hunter Din Djarin on the big screen, though, with Sigourney Weaver joining him in an undisclosed role, while showrunner Favreau is in the director's chair.

I think shows do a better job of bridging the gap between ROTJ and TFA. The Mandalorian and Ahsoka are great at expanding the worldbuilding and giving characters more time to develop. Movies feel too compressed to be able to tell a proper story, especially with the amount of stuff they would have to wrap up at this point. And also with the errors made in the sequel movies it feels like a lot of stuff is being forced into the shows just to try and fix some of them.

Like Rogue One is a good example, it's a great movie. But if you don't know any of the characters, or didn't read the novel, it just appears like a lot of random stuff being thrown at the viewer and there isn't enough time to let any of the characters grow much. And it only works because they practically killed the entire cast in the same movie and nailed the ending flowing into ANH. But once again they're doing more shows (Andor) to bridge another gap and give characters more room for a proper backstory.

As for Giancarlo's character, I do not hope he returns (despite loving to see him). Too many characters keep returning from death, even if it's in the form of clones (with the heavy implication in that last season). If they keep bringing them back and recycle them for yet another season/movie it just destroys any sort of impact these deaths are supposed to have on the story.

Seriously, if you want a character to be alive, DON’T KILL THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE!

Only to be canceled after one movie.
