MODERATORS

I saw the apology statement and the original tweet but I'm genuinely confused about what people are mad about?

Especially mad enough to make a fork of the Godot engine?

I did watch This video from Games From Scratch but he barely gives any actual information about what people are mad about. The most information I got is that a joke tweet was made and a non-affiliated moderator went a little overboard.

What am I missing here? What's got everyone so upset?

An unofficial discord admin told some discriminatory people to go fuck themselves for whining about an inclusive statement made by Godot engine.

[–] kevindqc@lemmy.world 120 points 1 month ago (3 children)

I'm always amazed how the fuck your feelings crowd have so many feelings and how loud they are about them.

[–] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 32 points 1 month ago

Reactionaries project their toxicity onto everything and everyone who doesn't conform to their nonsense.

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 25 points 1 month ago

Want you to live by rules and have none themselves is the most typical conservative quality ever. It's fuck YOUR feelings, not theirs.

[–] rainynight65@feddit.org 7 points 1 month ago

It's because they think only other people's feelings should get fucked, not their own.

[–] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 96 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh, so Godot is even more based now? That's cool to know. Toxic bigots don't belong in any community; deplatform and shame the fuck out of them.

[–] lolrightythen@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Is based good or bad? What does that even mean?

[–] Iapar@feddit.org 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It means something like rational or good from the point of view of the person saying "based". Or like "based in reality".

Person 1: "My partner broke up with me and I am sad about it but the relationship wasn't going anywhere and I think it is better that way. I should work on myself before I can be with someone"

Person2: "that is incredibly based. "

[–] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

That's not what based means here. "Admirable; praiseworthy, especially if the thing that is considered "praiseworthy" is unpopular or controversial."

[–] B312@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago

Good in the moral sense, like "they're a good person" not "that tastes good."

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago

It means "principled". We already had a word for it.

[–] Maven@lemmy.zip 53 points 1 month ago (13 children)

Is that it? That's pretty much everything I gathered from it too.

Why is anyone making a big deal of that???

[–] Ragnarok314159@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 month ago

The Xananax stuff made me think “wait a minute here, something’s not right” since they are part of the Godot community.

In the end it looks like more of the most toxic shitters in existence arguing with one another on Twitter.

[–] half_built_pyramids@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If godot stonks go down, maybe people will crawl back to unity and Riccitiello would get to have a smug I told you so moment

[–] boletus@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 month ago

Godot is not owned by a company, it doesn't have stocks or shareholders. Unless stonks means something else here.

[–] lefixxx@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I believe some of the are just anti woke. But in the storm people were blocked for posting criticism about the engine that led to more backlash

And godot apologized for it?

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Yes, saying it they don't represent them and they have an official discord server.

[–] citrusface@lemmy.world 78 points 1 month ago

Literally nothing. Godot is amazing and it's butt hurt phobic folk making a mountain out of a mole hill.

[–] RickRussell_CA@lemmy.world 50 points 1 month ago (4 children)
[–] Maven@lemmy.zip 65 points 1 month ago (3 children)

This has actually helped a lot.

I never understood the criticism people make of "maybe focus on the engine instead of making bad tweets" as in the social media manager is ALSO the lead coder or something?

At no point does putting out a tweet change how fast someone unrelated takes to code something.

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 34 points 1 month ago

Honestly this was my biggest takeaway, what fucking moron of an engineer thinks the guy running the twitter account has anything to do with bugfixes

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 month ago

Clearly bigots looking for any excuse to fight in the culture war. 30 years ago we had SJWs, now we just have CWs.

[–] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 1 month ago

Even if it was the lead coder, the 30 seconds needed to post a tweet aren't going to make that much of a difference on fixing a major bug.

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 48 points 1 month ago (2 children)

fuck am I really unironically going to Know Your Meme for news now??????????

...this is a weird timeline

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago

knowyourmeme, the hero we need, but don't deserve.

[–] Iapar@feddit.org 7 points 1 month ago

When the world becomes a joke the only reliable way to be informed is to "know your meme".

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago

@kryztofcheski wrote, "Woke studios always use pre-built engines to make games because they can't build their own engines."

LMAO most of the industry runs on a pre-built engine, what a loser

[–] Blizzard@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Very good summary. The only thing missing is a mention that in the aftermath a Godot fork called Redot was created and it's twitter account gained 17k followers in 2 days.

[–] magikmw@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Cool. Let's see how that goes.

[–] PrinzKasper@feddit.org 8 points 1 month ago

My guess is that at best they're going to mirror all the merges happening in the main godot repo with the only difference being the custom branding, but even that they will probably lose interest after a few months and peter out. I highly doubt there's going to be any unique developments or improvements. And even if they do? The main Godot repo could just yoink them right back lol.

[–] CaptainBasculin@lemmy.ml 41 points 1 month ago (1 children)

in a nutshell,

Godot community manager responds "lmao we're woke" to a tweet that says "using game engines is woke"

Some people decide to cancel godot because woke = bad, as a response a mod of unofficial Godot discord server says fuck that. Godot foundation disapproves of that language.

Godot's code is open for any developer to use however they want so anyone could make a fork of it; but just making a fork of a game engine and innovating on it are two different things.

Godot banned developers/financial backers on twitter and GitHub.

Creator of Godot engine, Head of development and Godot Foundation Board Member, Juan Linietsky is on record as saying,

"I deeply believe that any political discussion that puts labels to a group of people is one that not have started. As most of the people in this planet, no matter their political compass, seems to strongly disagree with me, I just prefer to stay entirely out of politics."

The Godot Foundation responded to the bans with this statement,

"On Friday, we made a tweet that unexpectedly led to a wave of harassment directed at our staff and community. We unequivocally condemn this abuse. The volume of negative engagement overwhelmed our moderation efforts. While attempting to protect the Godot community we mistakenly blocked individuals who were not participating in the harassment. The Godot Foundation Board takes full responsibility for these moderation actions.

If you believe you were blocked in error and have not violated our Code of Conduct, please contact us with the form linked below. We are committed swiftly rectifying any mistakes.

We firmly stand by our mission to keep our community spaces free from hate, discrimination, and other toxic behaviors." -The Godot Foundation Board

After this statement from Godot was released Juan Linietsky posted this on Mastodon,

"Will chill from Twitter/X until after the US elections. Almost all the hate Godot got over the weekend was pretty much people who had not a clue what a game engine is, what Godot is, or what a FOSS / Community made project is. Most of the ones who did were the usual haters.

Checking profile of haters, majority pro-trump people with weird religious symbology, or people with avatars/obsession for anime little girls.

Sometimes I feel I am too innocent for this world."

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 30 points 1 month ago

You missed the part about all the transphobic weirdos unironically declaring "Go woke, go broke" lmao

From what I've read sounds like it can be accurately summed up as stupid xitter drama over politics word.

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 month ago

Culture war bullshit. Godot did nothing wrong from what I've seen.

[–] captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Fuck, Godot is still on Twitter? Why is Godot still on Twitter?

[–] wkk@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Because believe it or not Twitter is still popular despite everything

So's Chlamydia. Lots of people have Chlamydia despite everything.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

still waiting on it
