Just as a note - it's important to be aware of https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/oct/09/inmate-evacuation-hurricane-milton-jail-prison-florida

Prisoners are people who have been found guilty of crimes (sometimes accurately, sometimes not) and are serving out some portion of their lives in punishment. There is no excuse for recklessly endangering their lives regardless of the crimes they committed and there was ample advanced warning to arrange for and safely evacuate inmates to another location.

It is an absolute fucking travesty they're being left to die - don't forget to send your good will/prayers/whatever that they make it through alive and in good health regardless of their crimes... and if you're a local or can put pressure on the system (especially if someone you know personally is being subjected to this) after the fact with a lawsuit or other action - please do so.

This should not be happening.

Oh God, that's horrifying. Thanks for highlighting this.

if this leads to incarcerated people coming to harm, I know that there will be people who will say that was a good thing and that makes me feel sick. As someone who has been a victim of violent crime, I thought that the perpetrator receiving a prison sentence would help me to heal from the trauma. I was wrong, and increasingly I understand that there is no justice to be found through retributive punishment, just more injustices heaped onto people.

[–] kescusay@lemmy.world 21 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That's fucking awful. What is wrong with Florida?

[–] barsquid@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

Republicans. And methamphetamine.

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Sure they left the prisoners behind, but the cops worked "around the clock" to make sure they moved their "evidence, paperwork and supplies" somewhere safe before the storm hit.

I guess they didn't learn their lesson from when thousands of prisoners were abandoned in their cells during Katrina.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

I guess they didn’t learn their lesson from when thousands of prisoners were abandoned in their cells during Katrina.

Did the authorities responsible for that go to prison themselves?

If not, then the Florida prison officials apparently did learn from it.

[–] Subtracty@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Were there no buses available to take them to other facilities? I guess they would argue that there is no way to securely transfer that many people that quickly. I wonder if there is an evacuation protocal requirement by the state that the prisons are not complying with, or if this was always the plan?

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 23 points 2 months ago

My personal cynical take? It'd cost too much money and the for profit prisons didn't want to pay it.

I'm sure they'll spin some bs about security but prisoner transfers happen all the time and people's lives are on the line.

[–] nkat2112@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago

Thank you for posting this. This truly is a travesty.

Your advice is excellent.

I'm watching the storm chaser feed. They said there are 13 tornado warnings right now.

Lake Okeechobee has a massive water spout.

Edit: All 25 Waffle Houses in Tampa are closed. Why is this important? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waffle_House_Index

[–] FruitfullyYours@lemmy.world 54 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Someone has posted that Waffle House is closing with less danger than in the past because of fear of litigation so, if that's the case, the Waffle House Index won't hold the same value

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago (1 children)

FWIW, the storm chaser YouTube feed I linked to above is what I'm listening to and they certainly implied it was pretty significant.

[–] AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Not necessarily an ad (moreso a recommendation I guess), but RadarOmega is a great way to watch storm chaser feeds as they're plotted directly on the map. It's also a very powerful tool if you're into meteorology and/or live in hurricane or tornado prone areas.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Appears to be $5/month.

[–] Fermion@feddit.nl 16 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Grade inflation is affecting the waffle houses now?!

[–] MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

The Costco hotdog and soda combo continues to hold...

[–] jewbacca117@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

I'm watching that one too. Straight to the point, nothing unnecessary. Great coverage

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 71 points 2 months ago (1 children)

About 90% of Florida is covered by Milton.

[–] kescusay@lemmy.world 32 points 2 months ago

That's just freaking bonkers.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 50 points 2 months ago (1 children)

There's a ton of tornadoes popping off over central Florida near Lake Okeechobee, which is really abnormal for tropical storms like this

[–] MagicPterodactyl@lemmy.ml 28 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I live in Orlando and one just touched down within a mile of my house. Scary stuff.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 21 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well if it destroys your house, you march right over to Epicot, go down to the basement, and have a word with Walt's frozen head about Orlando building regulations.

(But seriously, stay safe!)

[–] MagicPterodactyl@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 months ago

Luckily my house was built before Walt moved in so I should be good.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 38 points 2 months ago (3 children)

I can't find this flag on any flag list, but guys, maybe not the best time to show your patriotism?

[–] archomrade@midwest.social 16 points 2 months ago (2 children)
[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago

Arms. The crest is the thing on top of the helm or coronet on top of the arms.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crest_(heraldry)

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Very possibly.

[–] mister_flibble@lemm.ee 16 points 2 months ago

I see your dudes with a flag and raise you a guy in an inflatable dinosaur costume

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 months ago

It's a surprisingly high visibility moment... I agree it's dumb but if you have a cause to draw attention to that's going to get a lot more nationwide eyeballs than a giant protest in DC.

[–] archomrade@midwest.social 34 points 2 months ago

Every Waffle House in Tampa is closed.

[–] kescusay@lemmy.world 34 points 2 months ago (3 children)

About ten minutes ago, some extreme moron walked out on the Naples pier and put a Trump flag on it. You can see it flapping in the wind. I'm now taking bets on how long it lasts there.

https://naplespanorama.org/

[–] hperrin@lemmy.world 38 points 2 months ago

But it’s the Democrats who shove politics into everything. /s

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 30 points 2 months ago

If they meant to show that Trump is a massive windbag that will destroy everything he touches... message gotten across!

[–] breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca 18 points 2 months ago

The flag seems to have taken the entire feed down.

[–] alquicksilver@lemmy.world 30 points 2 months ago

Stay safe out there, friends! I hope we hear from every lemming in a day or so that they're okay.

From the looks of the video it doesn't necessary look like the dog was tied up, but that maybe it escaped its house/owner and got its leash stuck in the fence. It's still sad, and especially fucked up if the owners left the dog behind, somehow, but I don't want to jump to the conclusion that this happened on purpose until there is further info on it.

[–] JonsJava@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Apparently it's as bad as feared.

https://slrpnk.net/post/14289933

I know this is a late follow up, but I just saw it

[–] TopRamenBinLaden@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

Well then, let the pitchforks come out. What a huge piece of shit. Glad he's being charged, and hopefully the sentence isn't too light.

Really appreciate the update!

[–] ThrowawayInTheYear23@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The ads on the weather channel are terrible but the Harris attack ad certainly takes the cake.

[–] jlh@lemmy.jlh.name 11 points 2 months ago

The Naples Webcam seems to be down.

[–] queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 months ago

Jesus fucking Christ, the Southeast can't catch a break. I really hope Florida/other states affected call in for help.

[–] MojoMcJojo@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

This guy has been amazing at keeping people up to date on tornado touch downs and tracking the storm.

https://www.youtube.com/live/d-V_YnmER0Y?si=m9NbEM65OfzTtiWl

[–] robocall@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

I was watching when there were over 400K watching live. I suspect YT was struggling because it was sluggish at times.

[–] JonsJava@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Hurricane is no longer a thing, but we don't know the extent yet.

We will be leaving this post pinned for a few more days.

I don't have a good list, but I encourage those that can to donate to legitimate relief organizations.
