Here's your F-zero game: a battle royale where you bump into 99 people

I think F-Zero 99 is way for Nintendo to gauge the temperature. If the this game ends up getting a big player base and it stays consistent, then they will likely see that proper F-Zero game should be developed.

I remember a while back hearing Nintendo higher ups stating that they weren't sure the popularity was there for a new game. This is there way to checking.

I thought the same thing but it sucks because I really want a new F-Zero but I can’t see myself playing this a lot. It’s fun for a little bit but just too chaotic for me.

I think that is highly wishful thinking. I'm sure Nintendo has been going through the whole back catalog to find ways to make a battle royale of a game. Once someone saw the risk/reward that F-zero had with boosting depleting your life energy, it becomes a big an instant click. Plus, the racing environment allows all 99 players to interact in a way that none of the other games allowed (the other games were merely sending garbage to the other player.). F-Zero 99 is a good concept for the developers of the 99 games to try and apply. It wasn’t designed as a test to see if the community actually cared about the franchise.

Miyamoto has said that the reason we haven’t seen F-Zero again is that the developers haven’t found a way to differentiate the series in a way that will attract players. Although I feel like any of us could come up with a way (HD, Online play, randomized equipment drops,), Nintendo is convinced that these are not strong enough to justify the development cost.

"You all wanted a new entry in the F-ZERO franchise? Here you go! Now stop asking about it!"

Truly, this is the answer lol. We've only been waiting since GameCube era...

I understand the disappointment coming from longtime F-Zero fans. I haven't played GX yet, so I was totally looking forward to a port of it myself. At the same time, this actually looks really fun. And as a hilarious (not really) bonus, since it wasn't released on an anniversary, it won't be delisted!

Sounds fun for a short while.

Like the Battle Royal Mario game. Is that game still available?

[-] kadu@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago

They've removed it, unfortunately.

Who wants to take bets on how long it will be until F099 is taken down?

I’ve got a tenner on 01/01/24.

[-] HerrVorragend@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Too bad. I enjoyed it quite a bit...

Mario 35 was a blast, it would be great if Nintendo implemented some version of it into a full game

I think it looks fun af. But I bet they mtx the hell out of it.

[-] magic_lobster_party@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago

Sounds like a fun concept. I liked Tetris 99 and Mario 35, so might try it.

[-] darth_helmet@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 year ago

We need Doctor Mario 99

[-] Faradin@feddit.uk 7 points 1 year ago

Isn't it bump into 98 people?

[-] Shihali@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago

That looks like the point. They brought in using health to boost and spinning from F-Zero X, so just surviving to the finish line takes some skill and discipline.

Tetris and pac man have been fun, but Mario is definitely the best version of this. So fucking dumb that they retired it.

[-] freebread@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

A lot of people are disappointed but I'm enjoying it for what it is! Free game, ridiculous in nature, and I'm actually not bad at it even if it is just one big traffic jam. I feel like it will make me better at the base game.

I'd be happy if F-Zero GX was ported to the switch. I grew up playing F-Zero on snes and really enjoyed 64, but I never owned a gamecube cause I gor into playstations.. anyway I've heard good things about GX and wanna play it, but I'm not buying a gamecube just for that

[-] AEsheron@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

A remaster with some QoL improvements would be much appreciated. I mean. A straight poet would be great, upgraded graphics would be amazing, but some tweaks would be really nice. Some of it just hasn't aged well, especially the grinding needed for some stuff like unlocking parts. I'll gladly take a port, but a little extra would be nice.

[-] SeaJ@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

I would love for GX to be ported. I have never gotten it to get past the splash screen on Dolphin regardless of the computer I am playing on.

[-] ManuelTransmission@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

99 players but a switch ain't one.

[-] absentthereaper@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 1 year ago

And like that, the Direct just lost any further steam I could've had for it.

[-] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

It's at least something F-Zero. TBH battle royale racer was already F-Zero's niche. Races always had 20+ drivers and most races would end with some being blown up. I'm pretty sure F-Zero X had a survival mode to be the last one standing.

But yeah this being the original makes it much less exciting. F-Zero really hit its stride with X, featuring a MUCH larger cast, metal music, and faster gameplay.

While you're technically correct, the literal last thing I wanted to hear when I heard 'F-Zero news', the literal bottom of the barrel, was a minimum viable product using 25 year old assets that deliberately plays follow-the-leader chasing genre trends that a romhacker could've made.

Cool. I was pretty interested in it. Hope you find something else.
