Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

On this day in 1959, U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista fled the country following the victory of Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement (M-26-7) at the Battle of Santa Clara, marking the successful conclusion of the Cuban Revolution.

The 26th of July Movement takes its name from the date of with a failed attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953, however, the movement bearing this name was not formally organized until the attackers were released from prison in 1955. Public resistance continued sporadically until November 1956, when 80 members of the M-26-7 returned from exile.

Soon after landing on the island, a separate revolutionary group, the "Directorio Revoluncionari Estudiantil" (DRE), unsuccessfully attempted an attack on the Presidential Palace in Havana.

Throughout 1957, armed resistance from groups such as the DRE and M-26-7 would escalate. After a failed offensive by the government against rebels in the summer of 1958, the rebels launched a major counter-offensive.

On December 28th, 1958, after a fraudulent election in favor of Batista, revolutionary forces reached the city of Santa Clara. Seizing equipment from an armored train intended to transport government reinforcements, the rebels quickly captured the city, prompting Batista to panic and flee to the Dominican Republic with a personal fortune of more than $300 million.

In the following days, revolutionary forces entered Havana with no resistance, and Castro established a provisional government. The 26th of July Movement later reformed along Marxist–Leninist lines, becoming the Communist Party of Cuba in October 1965.

Batista later settled in fascist Spain, dying there in 1973 at the age of 72.

What did Robert Eggers mean when he turned Nosferatu into a half rotten cossack sex pest.

To be serious though, only part I just didn't like of the new film. Just not an interesting visual design IMO, looked like a better executed generic CGI horror monster of the caliber of the Van Helsing film.

the only rightful targets of something resembling Operation Swords Of Iron are SUV owners in the West

Get it twisted, mouth taping WILL solve all your problems

But seriously my mouth is a lot less dry this morning and I feel a little more rested (I think). Idk if I can recommend it unless you're also using a CPAP since that gives you guaranteed nasal airflow

I'm embarrassed with myself for not really having a gameplan for New Years Eve/Day. One of my favorite holidays. It's usually a time for my to reorient myself and do introspection, but I'm in such a tizzy this week.

I got no hate on Irish Trad. or Ragtime banjo, but I am irked on how often the banjo in most drawings is depicted with only four pegs. I just don't think that's intentional or maybe it's a shorthand like Simpson's hands.

We're moving on-prem virtual desktops to much more expensive Azure virtual desktops, and replacing a functional web front-end that backs onto our SSO to a PowerBI report front end. Like there's a powerbi report with a few buttons you click to log onto your virtual desktop. The latter I don't think is more expensive at least, but it feels like a deranged way to create a front end.

I've had some kinda cold/flu type thing (not covid, I don't think, because I haven't developed a sore throat like I did the times I had covid before) for like a week now. At what point do I start to question if I have pneumonia or something? I don't think it's gotten much better over the last 3 days, I'm just stuck with a dry cough and tightness in my chest. Only thing that seems to have gotten much better is my ability to taste food.

Huh, Cassette Beasts came out early 2023. I probably would have jumped into it right away, but I was burning out on Pokemon at that time and didn't think I could have the time for three monster collector games. Still pretty early in, but I'm hooked. Even my music stuff has been getting ignored this past week.
