Lemmy has been in development since 2019. And Lemmy uses pict-rs for images.

A feature I found particularly interesting is the ability to view community posts which I haven’t seen in any other frontends.

Invidious supports community posts.

There are a few Firefox forks:

  • LibreWolf
  • Waterfox
  • Arkenfox

And then there is Brave which I find smoother than Firefox, but that's just me.

Password is hashed locally. Only already hashed password is trasmitted over the internet.

I don't know the specifcs, but there are strict rules and requirements on how the data has to be stored if you process any of it, then there is complience issues with laws like GDPR and you have to be a registered entity as far as I know. It's just too much legal paperwork for most FOSS projects.

The difference is that they can't use illgally obtain information publically even if they have it, but if they got the same information by buying it it's perfectlly legal to use it in a court of law, etc.

Top comment made me smile

You are unlikely to find FOSS alternative that is not for cryptocurrencies as the regulations around credit card data processing makes it hard.

Unlikely based on current reports that Wagner still has recruitment operations from Molkino which is in Russia and only a small number of Wagner troops have arrived to Belarus. Belarusians are also against attacking Ukraine and every time Lukashenko even hinted at it senior generals said they will refuse to carry out the orders. Lukashenko has no real control in Belarus and is being protected by Russian Presidential Security Service (SBP) as he is afraid of being killed.

I don't think their are removing phone requirement, they will just add username support on top of it, so you can invite people using username, but still need phone to register an account.

Buying from private companies allows them to:

  • Bypass laws that prevent their agencies from collecting Americans data
  • Avoid scrutiny as these sales are not public
