Ah man, I didn't read those bits.

I had a look at a music shop and I'm not sure I want to encourage this hobby 😆

It seems the RSA-155 (512 bit) encryption commonly used in the 90s was broken in 1999, no quantum needed (due to it being based on primes).

Though from what I can search up, reddit users from 10 years ago were confident a 128 bit modern algorithm (e.g. AES) would never be able to be brute forced, even by quantum computers.

I dunno, sometimes I wonder if not everyone on the internet is an expert.

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 5 points 2 days ago

But isn't the point that we just need to stay ahead of it. Surely encryption used in the 90s could be broken by a quantum computer today?

Well that's the thing. I don't want to spend a pile of money for an actual musical instrument, because it's not going to be for lessons or anything, but I also don't want a disappointing pile of junk.

Thanks for the Amazon suggestion. Maybe something like this? It says it comes with a music sheet for simple songs for kids to play, that sounds promising?

Were the drinks particularly good or is it just nostalgia?

I admit I’m not sure what the typical charges are for possessing 37g of meth, but this seems incredibly low.

In the article it says the defence cited similar cases and suggested a $650 fine out of a maximum $1000.

The judge didn't think a $600 fine would deter him so opted for 200 hours community service (reduced to 150 due to mitigating circumstances).

He's also been clean since 2021 taking regular drug tests.

I dunno, I tend to think drug addiction is a health problem not a justice problem so it seems fine to me.

One of my kids wants a trumpet for Christmas. Does anyone know of a pretty cheap trumpet? Doesn't have to be musical. I see $20 plastic ones on ali express, metal ones start at more like $150. Not sure how good the plastic ones would be, plus it's a bit close to Christmas now for ali express shipping to be sure to arrive on time.

Ah this makes more sense. Thanks for watching the video for us! Can we just sail straight to Blenheim and avoid all that sailing close to land, instead of navigating the sounds...

I don't, but have only been here 10 years. Is it this? https://www.flickr.com/photos/flissphil/392740629

Maybe you're bad luck?

I always figure the best time to travel is just after an incident like this, when everyone is trying not to have a second incident.

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 3 points 3 days ago

Yeah I dunno. I don't think this was about safety, just didn't want to talk to them.

I did take a second look when I saw he was arriving at the "Class Act Awards", but it made more sense when I saw the awards were for students not politicians.

We're paying higher prices, specials are confusing and loyalty schemes aren't delivering overly significant rewards.

Those aren't just the musings of a frustrated supermarket shopper - but are some of the findings in the Commerce Commission's first annual grocery report, issued on Wednesday.

Rewards schemes were only giving a return of between 0.71 percent for Flybuys and 0.75 percent for Everyday Rewards.

Between 2007 and 2019, the average weekly spend on grocery food increased 7.3 percent every three years but the latest data showed a leap of 28.9 percent.

The commission's report said supermarkets would point to their own rising costs as the reason for price rises.

But it said margins had continued to grow - all of the major supermarkets had experienced an increase in price-cost margins, which meant that retail prices were increasing faster than the cost of the goods.

The report said supermarkets "continue to achieve higher levels of profitability than we would expect in a workably competitive market".

It was not likely that Costco would be able to expand to the point where it could become a serious third supermarket contender, it said.

The report said the Warehouse could be an option - its network of shops meant it was in a good position to encourage shoppers to split their shopping in many cases - but it had said it had no intention of raising the capital needed to compete.

The "five things" don't work that well as a list, but they are:

  • High prices aren't in your head
  • Competition is not bringing down margins, or prices
  • Other competitors aren't finding it easy
  • Innovation, but is it what we want?
  • Would fines make a difference?

Welcome to this week’s casual kōrero thread!

This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.

It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:

  • Something interesting that happened to you
  • Something humourous that happened to you
  • Something frustrating that happened to you
  • A quick question
  • A request for recommendations
  • Pictures of your pet
  • A picture of a cloud that kind of looks like an elephant
  • Anything else, there are no rules (except the rule)

So how’s it going?

A suspected boat burglar has been arrested after jumping into the tide and leading police on a slow-motion chase in the Bay of Islands.

He refused to come ashore, instead rowing towards the ferry ramp then abandoning his dinghy and swimming towards Russell.

Officers, including a police dog, followed him in an inflatable boat.

The police spokesperson said the man had missed his calling: "He should have been a marathon swimmer."

Home loan borrowers can expect rates to fall throughout the rest of this year and next, commentators say.

The Reserve Bank cut the official cash rate by 25bps to 5.25 percent on Wednesday.

While it was a move that was forecast by several economists, it was a u-turn from the bank's position in May. Infometrics chief executive Brad Olsen described it as a "WTH moment" and "the biggest flip-flop ever".

New Zealand athletes have bagged more gold medals at Paris 2024 than at any other Olympic Games in history.

The 10 golds claimed across the two weeks of competition have smashed the previous record of eight won at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

The Kiwis also bagged seven silver and three bronze medals to take the total number to 20 and finish 11th on the medal table, between Germany and Canada.

That is the same number of medals won at Tokyo 2020, which was previously New Zealand's most successful Olympics in terms of numbers. Athletes took seven golds, six silvers and seven bronzes at that competition.

About 2000 parcels have been destroyed after an NZ Post truck caught fire last week.

The truck caught fire in Te Kuiti in the early hours of 31 July, with parcels on board bound for delivery in Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Taupō, NZ Post said.

I hope no one has been waiting for a delivery.

Hayden Wilde had hoped it would come down to this. Just him and his long-time friend and rival, Alex Yee of Great Britain, duking it out on the run leg on the picturesque streets around Paris for the Olympic triathlon title.

Just 400m from the finish line alongside the gilded columns on the Pont Alexandre III, Yee summoned one last push to streak past the Kiwi. Wilde could not respond.

"I was just depleted. I was gone. I was done. I had nothing left and I just had to survive to get to the finish line," Wilde says of that moment Yee ran past him to snatch the gold from his grasp.

The New Zealand Herald’s publisher NZME says it should have employed more “journalistic rigour” when it used artificial intelligence tools to create an editorial that appeared in the Weekend Herald, online and in regional papers recently.

Truncated sentences and repetition of key words appeared characteristic of generative AI applications like ChatGPT.
