wordpress.org = the foundation making the software
wordpress.com = the company (well, its parent, Automattic) paying the WP foundation, offering paid managed WP hosting
WP Engine = a third party company, just plainly offering plain managed WP hosting

Of the above, the company behind wordpress.com started this hate campaign against WP Engine
